Toyota Motor Corporation (TM) released results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027, which ended September 30, 2026. The report stands out because the world's largest automaker faces a complex environment of strong hybrid demand, a weak yen, and growing competition in China. I was watching closely to see if higher-margin hybrid and electrified sales could counter cost pressures, U.S. tariff concerns, and reduced presence in the largest auto market. The decision to raise the full-year profit outlook while lowering vehicle sales guidance highlights the strength of its hybrid lineup and careful cost control, offering a useful signal for the wider sector.
In the quarter, Toyota posted operating income of ¥1.127 trillion ($7.1 billion), up 34% from ¥839.5 billion a year earlier and ahead of the Reuters analyst estimate of ¥992 billion. This marked the first operating profit increase in six quarters. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Sales revenue climbed 8.6% to ¥13.437 trillion, matching expectations and rising from ¥12.377 trillion previously. The weaker yen drove much of the revenue gain even as vehicle volumes fell.
Net income dropped 18.5% to ¥759.4 billion from ¥932.0 billion, due to higher costs and other challenges. Total vehicle sales declined 5.2% to 2.667 million units, mainly because of a 12% drop in China from intense local EV competition. North America and Japan held steady, and Europe saw growth.
Toyota lifted its full-year operating profit forecast to ¥3.900 trillion from ¥3.400 trillion, above last year’s ¥3.766 trillion. Net income guidance rose to ¥3.570 trillion from ¥3.250 trillion. Revenue outlook was trimmed to ¥53.500 trillion from ¥54.000 trillion, and vehicle sales guidance fell to 10.990 million units from 11.180 million. The company also raised its share buyback ceiling to ¥1.3 trillion from ¥1.0 trillion and increased the interim dividend to ¥50 per share from ¥45.
Shares of TM jumped as much as 15% after the release, among the stronger performers on the Nikkei 225. Investors welcomed the better-than-expected operating profit and higher full-year guidance, seeing it as confirmation that hybrid demand and currency benefits can offset China volume weakness. The larger buyback program and increased dividend added support for the shareholder-return approach. Sentiment stays cautiously positive, though questions remain about China competition, U.S. tariff exposure, and how long currency gains can last.
The raised full-year profit guidance points to management confidence in the hybrid strategy. From what I see, investors should track whether the weaker yen keeps providing support, since currency moves played a big role in revenue growth and could shift.
China stands out as the biggest risk. Local EV makers have cut prices aggressively, and Toyota’s regional sales fell 12% year over year. Further weakness there could affect both volumes and margins. Success in holding share in China while relying on North American hybrid strength will shape the outlook.
U.S. tariff policy and input costs also deserve attention. Tariff and material expenses already pressured results, and any increase could reduce the margin gains seen this quarter. On returns to shareholders, the higher buyback limit and dividend suggest willingness to distribute more cash, a trend worth following in future quarters.
