Arlo Technologies, Inc. (ARLO) is a Carlsbad, California-based provider of smart home security cameras, video doorbells, and subscription-based monitoring services. The company's shares tumbled 18.13% in Thursday's session, dropping from a prior close of $14.84 to $12.15. The decline extended an after-hours slide that began following the company's third-quarter earnings release, as investors looked past a headline beat and instead fixated on slowing annual recurring revenue growth, a contracting hardware business, and rising channel inventory.
On the surface, ARLO delivered a solid quarter. Revenue rose 6.9% year over year to $149.18 million, topping the roughly $145 million consensus estimate. Non-GAAP earnings of $0.24 per share exceeded the $0.20 analysts expected. Subscriptions and services revenue reached a record $96.0 million, up 20%, and now represents about 64% of the revenue mix, while adjusted EBITDA climbed more than 50% year over year.
Yet the market reaction was decisively bearish. The core problem was deceleration: annual recurring revenue (ARR) grew only 14% to $370 million, down from 16% in the second quarter and 28% a year earlier. That slowdown collided with a stock that had surged more than 20% in the preceding month, leaving shares priced for perfection. With growth slowing almost everywhere outside the services line, the beat was not enough to sustain the prior rally.
Pressure also came from the product side of the business. Product revenue fell to $53.1 million from $59.6 million a year earlier, weighed down by Prime Day timing and promotional pricing pressure. Product gross margin turned negative on a GAAP basis, from roughly breakeven in the prior quarter. Management acknowledged that inventory rose to $52.3 million, with inventory turns dropping to 4.7x from 6.4x, while weeks of U.S. distribution channel inventory jumped to 14.9 from 5.9 ahead of aggressive fourth-quarter promotions. That buildup raises the bar for holiday sell-through and signaled a heavier reliance on discounting to move hardware.
The forward outlook added to investor unease. Fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $137 million to $147 million, with non-GAAP EPS of $0.17 to $0.23, was broadly in line with expectations but implied little sequential momentum. Meanwhile, management's ambitious target of roughly 30% ARR growth for 2027 was undercut by the disclosure that the highly anticipated Comcast launch has slipped to mid-2027, and that partner ADT faces a potential take-private transaction that clouds that relationship. For a story built on a reacceleration of recurring revenue, these timing uncertainties undercut confidence in the near-term growth bridge.
The decline occurred on notably elevated volume relative to the company's average, reflecting broad-based repositioning rather than isolated selling. The move was largely company-specific, driven by the earnings release rather than a broad sector or macro catalyst, though small-cap hardware and subscription names have faced relative pressure as investors favor larger-cap AI infrastructure plays. The slide pushed shares decisively below short-term support levels and back toward the lower end of the stock's recent trading range, erasing much of the prior month's gains.
Looking ahead, investors will monitor whether subscription momentum can offset hardware weakness during the critical holiday quarter. Key signals include the pace of ARR additions, revenue per account, the timing of the Comcast launch, and whether the newly authorized $100 million share repurchase program meaningfully reduces the share count. Risks include tariff-related cost pressures on products manufactured outside the U.S., rising memory costs, and intensifying competition from larger platform players. The fourth-quarter report will be pivotal in determining whether the growth reacceleration management is promising can materialize.
