AT&T Inc. (T), one of the largest U.S. telecommunications and broadband providers, saw its stock tumble about 6.4% in Wednesday's session, falling to roughly $21.92 from a prior close of $23.42. The selloff followed the company's third-quarter earnings release, which delivered headline beats but sparked concerns about wireless subscriber growth, a hefty impairment charge, and a higher debt load. Despite an earnings- and revenue-topping quarter and an upgraded 2026 profit forecast, markets seized on the negative details, driving one of the stock's sharpest single-day declines of the year.
AT&T reported adjusted earnings of $0.65 per share on revenue of $32.3 billion, ahead of consensus estimates of about $0.60 per share and $31.7 billion. Revenue rose 5.3% year over year, and the company raised its full-year 2026 adjusted earnings guidance to roughly $2.40 per share, up from a prior range of $2.25 to $2.35.
Yet the market reaction turned sharply negative. The key disappointment was postpaid phone net additions of 379,000, which fell short of analyst expectations near 387,400 and marked a slowdown from 405,000 in the year-ago quarter. Postpaid phone churn also edged higher to 0.92% from 0.86%. For a carrier whose growth story depends on profitable wireless customers, the softer subscriber metric overshadowed an otherwise solid quarter, including a record 769,000 internet additions (442,000 of them on fiber).
Beyond the subscriber data, investors digested a sharp divergence between adjusted and reported results. GAAP earnings from continuing operations fell to about $0.13 per share from $1.29 a year earlier, weighed down by a $2.6 billion non-cash impairment tied to the company's held-for-sale Mexico wireless business and employee separation costs. The year-ago figure was also inflated by a gain on the sale of AT&T's DirecTV investment.
Balance-sheet concerns added to the pressure. Following a roughly $23 billion spectrum purchase, net debt relative to adjusted EBITDA rose to about 3.13x from 2.68x, and management indicated the leverage target of around 2.5x would likely be reached by 2029 rather than sooner. The slower deleveraging path and elevated capital spending tempered enthusiasm over the raised profit outlook and ongoing buyback plans.
Renewed worries about competition from SpaceX also amplified the decline. SpaceX's push into direct-to-cell service through Starlink Mobile, including its acquisition of 800 MHz spectrum, has fueled long-term concerns about pricing power across the wireless industry. Those fears weighed on the sector, with peers Verizon and T-Mobile also trading lower, though AT&T's slide was notably steeper, pointing to company-specific earnings concerns as the primary driver of the day's losses.
Trading volume was elevated as investors repriced the shares following the earnings release, reflecting heavy participation relative to recent sessions. The move came against a backdrop in which the broader telecom group traded lower in sympathy, even as AT&T's decline outpaced its peers. From a technical standpoint, the stock broke below near-term support and remained below key moving averages, underscoring the bearish tone of the session. The shares had already been under pressure in 2026, and the day's drop extended a pullback from spring highs.
Looking ahead, investors will focus on whether the postpaid phone subscriber slowdown is specific to AT&T or indicative of a broader industry trend. Upcoming third-quarter reports from Verizon and T-Mobile will offer an important read on competitive dynamics and customer churn across the sector. Analysts will also monitor AT&T's capital spending trajectory, its progress toward debt-reduction targets, and the impact of the completed sale of its Mexico operations. The evolving competitive threat from satellite-based mobile services remains a key uncertainty for the entire telecom group.
