Axon Enterprise, Inc. (AXON) — the maker of TASER conducted-energy devices, body-worn cameras, and cloud-based software for law enforcement and public safety — saw its shares plunge roughly 16.88% in Friday's session, trading near $317.97 after closing the prior session at $382.56. The selloff extended a sharp after-hours decline that began when the company reported third-quarter results late Thursday. Markets pointed to an earnings and revenue miss, a lowered full-year outlook driven by slower federal drone deployments, and a sizable new capital commitment as the primary reasons for the steep drop.
The stock's slide was driven first by a downbeat third-quarter report. AXON posted record revenue of $908.55 million, up about 28% year over year, but that figure fell short of Wall Street's consensus of roughly $934 million to $940 million. Adjusted earnings of $1.72 per share also missed estimates near $1.88 to $1.91, even as adjusted EBITDA rose 33% to about $236 million.
More damaging was the outlook. Management trimmed full-year 2026 revenue guidance to a range of $3.61 billion to $3.63 billion, down from a prior range of $3.67 billion to $3.725 billion, citing three federal Dedrone deployments worth about $130 million that are no longer expected to be recognized this year. Fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $990 million to $1.01 billion also came in below the roughly $1.06 billion analysts had modeled. The company separately lowered its free-cash-flow target to $350 million to $400 million from about $450 million, reflecting an accelerated inventory build.
The guidance cut stemmed largely from lumpy, big-ticket government purchasing cycles. Management attributed the shortfall to roughly $30 million of Dedrone revenue that slipped out of the third quarter and about $100 million more expected in the fourth quarter. That concentrated federal-timing risk rattled investors who had priced AXON for consistent hypergrowth.
At the same time, the company announced an additional $1.2 billion investment in Skydio, raising its stake in the drone maker to 37% and securing exclusive public-safety distribution rights in the U.S. and Canada. While framed as a strategic bet on "Drone as First Responder" technology, the capital-intensive commitment added near-term pressure as investors weighed dilution and execution risk against the long-term opportunity.
Sell-side responses amplified the decline. Needham cut its price target to $500 from $750, Piper Sandler trimmed its target to $540 from $561, and Baird lowered its target to $600 from $675. Zacks downgraded the stock from "strong buy" to "hold." The cluster of downward revisions underscored Wall Street's concern that the company's premium valuation offered little cushion for a guidance step-down.
The drop was clearly idiosyncratic rather than macroeconomic. The Nasdaq Composite gained about 1.7% and the S&P 500 advanced modestly on the day, confirming that AXON was moving against the broader tape. Volume surged well above average as investors repriced the shares, which traded near and below their prior 52-week low and well beneath their 50-day and 200-day moving averages. The move pushed the stock to new one-year lows, breaking through previously established support levels.
Investors will focus on whether the roughly $130 million in deferred federal Dedrone revenue simply shifts into 2027 or signals a more persistent slowdown in government procurement. The company's software story remains a bright spot — Software & Services revenue grew 43% to $437 million, annual recurring revenue rose 40% to $1.75 billion, and AI annual recurring revenue crossed $100 million — but the market now appears more skeptical of the consolidated growth rate. Upcoming earnings reports, any clarity on federal contract timing, and the execution of the Skydio partnership will be closely watched. Risks include continued lumpiness in federal orders, margin pressure from hardware mix and memory costs, and the possibility of further multiple compression if growth decelerates again.
