EchoStar Corporation (ECHO), the Englewood, Colorado-based communications company behind brands including DISH, Sling TV, Boost Mobile, and Hughes/HughesNet, surged sharply on Wednesday. Shares climbed roughly 8.06% to around $93.35, up from the prior session's close of $86.39, as investors repriced the company's emerging stake in SpaceX following blockbuster quarterly results from the rocket maker.
The immediate market reaction traces back to SpaceX's (SPCX) third-quarter earnings, which showed revenue up roughly 161% year over year. The report sent SpaceX shares higher and, in turn, rallied a broad swath of global space and satellite names. EchoStar was among the biggest beneficiaries because of its $17 billion spectrum agreement with SpaceX, under which it is set to receive up to $8.5 billion in cash and up to $8.5 billion in SpaceX shares.
Analysts estimate that when the deal closes, EchoStar will hold roughly 2% of SpaceX — approximately 262 million shares. That makes EchoStar's stock price highly sensitive to movements in SpaceX's valuation. As SpaceX shares rallied on strong results, the implied net asset value of EchoStar's pending stake rose in tandem, giving investors a direct read-through catalyst that had little to do with EchoStar's own operating performance.
Wednesday's rally built on a string of increasingly bullish analyst calls. On October 16, JPMorgan issued a sweeping double upgrade of EchoStar, lifting its rating from Underweight to Overweight and setting a $144 price target. The bank argued the shares were trading at roughly a 40% discount to estimated net asset value — a discount it called "unwarranted" — and pointed to EchoStar's combined $43 billion in spectrum sales to AT&T (T) and SpaceX as a transformative event that reduced balance-sheet risk.
On Wednesday, Zacks Research added fuel to the move with a same-day upgrade to "strong buy," reinforcing the view that EchoStar has become an investment-style vehicle with meaningful value-unlocking optionality, including upside in the SpaceX stake, additional spectrum monetization, and a potentially earlier-than-expected start to share repurchases.
The advance pushed EchoStar shares back above their 50-day moving average, which had been acting as overhead resistance during a recent multi-week pullback. Even with Wednesday's gain, the stock remains well below its 52-week high of $147.25, underscoring how much ground the shares gave up earlier in the year. The move also aligned with strength across the broader space and satellite complex, where peers such as AST SpaceMobile and Rocket Lab gained in sympathy with SpaceX's results.
Macro conditions provided a constructive backdrop, with the Nasdaq Composite up about 0.7% and the S&P 500 up about 0.2% as easing concerns and anticipation of major technology earnings lifted risk appetite. Institutional conviction has also been building, with Lancaster Investment Management disclosing an 18.5% increase in its EchoStar position during the third quarter, making the stock its largest holding.
Looking ahead, the primary event on the horizon is the closing of the SpaceX transaction, which remains a key milestone for realizing the value embedded in the pending share stake. Investors will also monitor progress on any additional spectrum monetization, the outcome of potential European spectrum bids tied to EchoStar's 2GHz license, and whether management moves to initiate share repurchases sooner than expected.
Risks remain. The SpaceX deal may not close until late 2027, EchoStar continues to report negative net margins and declining revenue, and the company's valuation is now tied, in part, to the volatility of SpaceX shares rather than its own fundamentals. EchoStar's next quarterly report is expected in early November, which could refocus attention on the underlying operational performance of its Pay-TV, Retail Wireless, and Broadband and Satellite Services segments.
