Oatly Group AB (OTLY), the Swedish maker of oat-based milk and dairy alternatives, saw its shares plunge on Wednesday after the company reported third-quarter 2026 results that disappointed investors and trimmed its full-year profit outlook. The stock fell roughly 16.34%, dropping from a previous close of $11.75 to around $9.83 in midday trading, as markets reacted to a wider quarterly loss and a lowered adjusted EBITDA forecast.
The sharp sell-off was driven by Oatly's third-quarter report, released before the market opened. Total revenue rose 9.1% year over year to $243.1 million, roughly in line with expectations but just shy of the consensus near $246.6 million. More concerning for investors, the company posted a non-GAAP loss of $0.86 per share, meaningfully wider than the approximately $0.70 loss analysts had modeled.
The decisive blow came from guidance. Management lowered its full-year 2026 adjusted EBITDA outlook to a range of $16 million to $20 million, down from a prior range of $20 million to $35 million. While the company maintained its constant-currency revenue growth outlook of 8% to 10%, the reduced profitability forecast signaled that cost pressures are eroding the bottom line faster than expected.
Oatly attributed the guidance cut primarily to stronger and faster-than-expected fuel and freight inflation in North America. Management said transportation cost increases, combined with timing delays, would adversely affect its ability to generate profit in the fourth quarter. Although gross margin widened 440 basis points to 34.1% on supply-chain improvements and favorable price/mix, those gains were partially offset by higher logistics costs and freight constraints in the U.S. market.
The results also highlighted a widening gap between Oatly's strongest and weakest regions. Europe & International delivered a 19.5% revenue increase, and North America posted a modest 2.8% gain. Greater China, however, remained a drag, with revenue down 14.6% as intense competition in the foodservice channel persisted. The company continues to conduct a strategic review of its Greater China operations, though it has offered no assurance that a transaction will result.
Trading volume was elevated relative to recent sessions, reflecting heavy selling pressure as investors repositioned following the earnings release. The decline was largely idiosyncratic rather than sector-wide, with Oatly's move driven by company-specific fundamentals rather than a broad rotation out of consumer staples. The stock's drop took it decisively below its recent trading range and put it closer to the lower end of its 52-week span, underscoring the magnitude of the negative market reaction.
Looking ahead, investors will focus on whether Oatly can offset higher North American freight and fuel costs through pricing and efficiency measures. The company's full-year revenue guidance remains intact, but execution on profitability will be closely scrutinized. Key areas to watch include the outcome of the Greater China strategic review, ongoing gross-margin trends, and whether the interest burden on Oatly's debt load continues to pressure reported losses. Macro conditions, including energy prices and foodservice demand, remain important swing factors.
