WPP plc, the London-based advertising and communications group, released its Third Quarter 2026 Trading Update on October 29, 2026. This update serves as an important checkpoint on the Elevate28 turnaround plan, which targets stabilization in 2026, a return to growth in 2027, and faster expansion after that. Quarterly reports like this one carry weight because the advertising industry moves in cycles tied to client spending, technology changes, and the expanding influence of artificial intelligence in marketing. With client losses from prior years still affecting results, I am watching to see if the recent sequential gains hold and if cost controls are building a stronger base.
WPP posted third-quarter revenue of £3,274 million, rising 0.5% year over year on both reported and like-for-like bases. Revenue less pass-through costs, the preferred gauge of underlying performance, dropped 2.0% on a reported basis and 2.1% on a like-for-like basis to £2,411 million. This marked a step forward from the 2.8% like-for-like decline seen in the second quarter. For the first nine months, revenue reached £9,647 million (down 2.8% reported, 1.9% LFL), while revenue less pass-through costs totaled £7,156 million (down 4.4% reported, 3.9% LFL).
Inside the Global Integrated Agencies segment, WPP Media posted a 0.3% gain and returned to growth, WPP Production advanced 2.5%, and WPP Creative slipped 5.1%. Every region posted like-for-like declines, including North America (-1.8%), EMEA (-1.7%), APAC (-4.3%), and LATAM (-1.2%). Full earnings figures appear only at the half-year and full-year marks, so this release omitted quarterly earnings per share. Management noted the results aligned with expectations and left full-year guidance unchanged. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to compare the stock with peers in the sector.
Shares of WPP climbed roughly 2% after the update, adding to an approximate 14% year-to-date advance. The positive reaction appeared driven by relief that the revenue drop eased from the prior quarter and that guidance stayed intact. Recent client wins with The Coca-Cola Company, DoorDash, Nestlé, Uber, and Waymo helped sentiment as well. That said, investors remain measured given ongoing work through earlier client losses, continued pressure in WPP Creative, and no expected return to growth until 2027. The measured response suggests the market sees this as measured progress rather than a major turning point.
Management kept its outlook steady, expecting like-for-like revenue less pass-through costs to decline in the low-to-mid single digits for the second half, with the fourth quarter likely toward the better end of that range. The full-year headline operating margin target remains 12% to 13%. Several areas deserve attention in upcoming quarters: the sustainability of WPP Media’s return to growth, the pace of improvement in WPP Creative, and regional performance, especially in China and amid geopolitical issues in the Middle East and Africa. Adjusted net debt of £3.0 billion at the end of September, down from £3.6 billion a year earlier, and at least £200 million in expected disposal proceeds also support the balance-sheet focus. The Elevate28 strategy and the AI-enabled WPP Open platform will stay central to the 2027 growth target.
