The YieldMax MSTR Option Income Strategy ETF (MSTY) is an actively managed exchange-traded fund that aims to generate current income while offering exposure to the share price of Strategy Inc (formerly MicroStrategy, Nasdaq: MSTR), with a built-in limit on potential gains. It does not hold Strategy stock directly. Instead, the fund employs a synthetic covered-call approach consisting of three main elements: synthetic long exposure to MSTR through a long call and short put, short-dated call options sold against that position, and U.S. Treasury securities as collateral.
Its portfolio generally includes 23 to 29 holdings, centered on short-term U.S. Treasury bills and notes, a money-market fund, and a series of MSTR call options. The net expense ratio stands at 1.03%, and the fund is non-diversified. By writing calls with strikes typically 5% to 15% above the current price, MSTY gives up most upside beyond that range while remaining fully exposed to declines. This setup means the fund tends to lag MSTR in strong rallies but follows its drawdowns closely. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the fund compares to other single-stock income strategies.
Over the past 30 days, MSTY advanced approximately 21%, moving from a close near $12.55 to about $15.13. The advance was not steady; the fund reached a low in the low-to-mid $12 range in mid-August before rising sharply in late August and early September.
The quarterly view shows a different picture. Three months earlier, MSTY traded near $16.66, so the fund remains roughly 9% lower over the quarter despite the recent rebound. The period featured a steep decline from June into August, a multi-week basing phase, and then the partial recovery. From what I see, the 30-day gain needs to be viewed against this still-negative quarterly trend.
The main catalyst came from a rebound in Bitcoin and in Strategy shares, which climbed roughly 45% over the month as Bitcoin rose around 24%. Strategy resumed Bitcoin purchases in late August after a roughly ten-week pause, acquiring about 4,603 Bitcoin at an average of $80,318 per coin and bringing its total holdings to approximately 845,050 Bitcoin. That announcement helped fuel a single-session gain of more than 17% in MSTR, which flowed through to higher values for MSTY’s call-option positions.
Because MSTY writes short-dated calls above the current price, the fund captured only the portion of the rally up to its strike caps rather than the full move. Treasury holdings supplied a stable income component, while the synthetic long exposure and written calls accounted for the price appreciation. Sentiment toward Bitcoin-treasury companies improved with the broader crypto recovery, supporting demand for the strategy.
The quarter was shaped by a sharp drawdown in Bitcoin and Strategy’s equity. Between late June and early August, Strategy sold roughly 7,000 Bitcoin at prices between about $59,000 and $64,000 per coin to handle preferred-stock obligations, and its shares fell more than 50% on a trailing 12-month basis. Those declines pulled MSTY lower, since the fund’s synthetic exposure stayed fully exposed to the downside.
Second-quarter results highlighted the pressure: Strategy reported a net loss driven largely by a multibillion-dollar unrealized loss on its digital-asset holdings. The fund’s high distribution yield also includes a substantial return of capital component rather than purely generated income, which can reduce net asset value over time. The recent partial recovery reflects improved sentiment and Bitcoin’s bounce rather than any structural change in the fund itself.
The most important factors for MSTY going forward remain Bitcoin’s price path and Strategy’s capital-markets activity. Strategy’s model relies on issuing equity and preferred securities to fund Bitcoin purchases, and its shares function as a leveraged proxy for the cryptocurrency. Ongoing volatility in Bitcoin would likely pass through directly to MSTR and then to MSTY.
Investors should also track the composition of the fund’s distributions. A high yield that includes sizable return of capital can erode NAV over time, and the cap from written call options limits participation in extended rallies. Interest-rate expectations and Treasury yields influence collateral income, while regulatory developments around digital assets could affect sentiment. The fund’s structure offers minimal downside protection despite the income focus, so volatility and underlying price levels stay central to watch in the months ahead.
