eGain Corporation provides AI-powered knowledge management and customer experience automation software. Its platform helps enterprises bring together scattered content, automate reliable knowledge processes, and roll out AI assistants for both customer service and internal support. The company works with global enterprise clients across multiple industries, primarily through subscription-based SaaS contracts.
The firm has been shifting focus toward what it calls its "AI customer" base—those using at least one AI feature. In fiscal 2026, revenue from these customers rose 20% year over year, with AI customer annual recurring revenue reaching $54 million, or 72% of total SaaS ARR. In July 2026, Gartner placed eGain as a Leader in its first Magic Quadrant for customer service knowledge management systems, ranking it highest for ability to execute and furthest for completeness of vision. I’m watching this transition closely because the company is intentionally winding down its older conversation and analytics offerings while scaling the faster-growing AI side.
From September 2 to October 2, 2026, shares of EGAN moved from $7.23 down to $5.87, a drop of about 19%. Most of the decline happened in one session on September 4, when the stock fell roughly 18% to $5.84 on heavy volume after the earnings release and guidance. Further selling pushed it into the low-$5 area by September 8–9, after which it began to stabilize. By early October it had recovered modestly into the $5.80–$5.95 range.
Looking at the full quarter, the stock traded between $6.30 and $6.60 early in July, climbed toward a mid-August peak near $7.50, then gave back those gains after the September reset. It finished the period down about 10% from roughly $6.50 at the start of the quarter.
The main driver was the fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 report released after the close on September 3. Results were mixed to positive on the surface: full-year revenue rose 3% to $91.1 million, AI customer revenue grew 20%, adjusted EBITDA reached $13.6 million (15% margin), and operating cash flow hit a record $21.2 million. Fourth-quarter non-GAAP earnings of $0.08 per share topped the consensus estimate of $0.03.
Guidance for fiscal 2027, however, disappointed. Management called for total revenue between $84.5 million and $86.0 million—below both the prior year and analyst expectations around $94 million—and projected adjusted EBITDA margins of just 1% to 2%. Legacy customer ARR is expected to fall about 60% as the company speeds up its exit from non-AI business, while AI customer revenue is guided to grow only 8% to 10%. Analyst actions followed on September 8: Roth/MKM moved to Neutral from Buy and cut its price target to $7 from $21, while B. Riley kept Neutral but lowered its target to $6 from $10.50. Both pointed to the softer outlook and legacy attrition outpacing AI growth. Net retention over the trailing 12 months fell to 93%, and total SaaS ARR declined 1% year over year.
Through the summer the stock had advanced on AI momentum, the Gartner recognition, a 27% rise in new-logo wins, and a doubling of large pipeline opportunities. Those factors supported the move into the mid-$7 range. The September report reframed the picture. Long-term targets of $100 million to $120 million in AI customer ARR by fiscal 2030, implying 17% to 22% compound annual growth, still look distant given near-term guidance for revenue decline and margin compression. The market adjusted valuations to reflect the cost and length of the transition, leaving the stock about 10% lower for the quarter despite the earlier rally.
Going forward, execution details will matter more than macro factors. I’m paying close attention to whether AI customer ARR growth re-accelerates toward the 17%–22% range implied by the 2030 targets and whether new wins and pilots convert into production deployments. The pace of legacy runoff remains critical, as fiscal 2027 assumptions include that roughly 60% decline in legacy ARR. Updates on total SaaS ARR, net retention, and remaining performance obligations will be key. Gartner recognition and a stronger enterprise pipeline are positives, but they have not yet offset the near-term revenue pressure. Company guidance and further analyst revisions will likely stay the most immediate influences on sentiment.
