ADP serves as a key indicator for the U.S. labor market and a reference point for the human capital management software sector. Its quarterly results, especially metrics like pays per control, give investors an early signal on private-sector hiring trends. With the company handling payroll for roughly one in six U.S. workers, its performance and outlook carry significant weight. This first quarter of fiscal 2027 also provides a checkpoint on ADP's AI initiatives, as management focuses on improving service productivity and maintaining margin expansion. For shareholders, the results test whether the company can sustain profitable growth in a low-hire, low-fire environment. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
For the three months ended September 30, 2026, ADP posted total revenue of $5.49 billion, a 6% increase from $5.18 billion a year earlier and marginally above the consensus estimate of about $5.47 billion. GAAP net earnings rose 11% to $1.13 billion, while adjusted diluted EPS increased 13% to $2.82, exceeding the roughly $2.77 analysts expected.
Adjusted EBIT grew 12% to $1.47 billion, and the adjusted EBIT margin expanded 130 basis points to 26.8%. The Employer Services segment delivered revenue growth of 6%, helped by a 2% increase in U.S. pays per control. The PEO segment grew revenue 7% to $1.81 billion, while interest on funds held for clients rose 15% to $329 million, reflecting higher client fund balances and yields.
Heading into the report, ADP shares had surged roughly 49% over the prior six months and were trading near their 52-week high, setting a high bar for the print. Even as results beat consensus, the stock slipped about 2% to 3% in premarket trading, a sign that investors had priced in an even stronger outcome. The market's muted-to-negative response reflects both the strong run-up and some caution around a softer start in ADP's global offerings. That said, the company's raised full-year guidance and healthy demand commentary suggest underlying business momentum remains intact, and sentiment appears balanced between optimism over margin expansion and wariness of an already-elevated valuation.
ADP raised its fiscal 2027 outlook following the quarter. Management now expects consolidated revenue growth of about 6%, up from a prior range of 5%–6%, and adjusted EPS growth of 10%–12%, up from 9%–11%. The company reaffirmed its expectation for adjusted EBIT margin expansion of 70 to 90 basis points for the year.
Investors should watch several factors in the coming quarters. First, pays per control rose 2% in the quarter, and management now forecasts about 1% growth for the full year, an improvement from its prior outlook. This remains a key labor-market signal worth monitoring.
Second, client funds interest remains an important swing factor. ADP lifted its client funds interest revenue forecast by $50 million to a range of $1.59 billion to $1.61 billion, reflecting higher average balances and a rising yield. Shifts in interest rates will continue to influence this high-margin revenue stream.
Finally, keep an eye on the pace of AI adoption. Management said its proprietary AI-infused service platform, The Zone, had been deployed to 60% of its service population, up from 48% at the end of fiscal 2026. Continued progress on cost-to-serve and retention will be central to sustaining the margin gains investors have come to expect.
