Alphabet's third-quarter results arrive at a pivotal moment for the search-and-advertising giant, which has pivoted aggressively toward artificial intelligence infrastructure. Investors are closely watching whether surging capital expenditures translate into measurable revenue growth, particularly in Google Cloud. The report also tests whether core Search advertising can sustain double-digit growth amid intensifying AI competition. Coming off a prior quarter marked by a one-time investment gain, this period strips away that distortion and offers a clearer view of underlying profitability. With free cash flow turning negative for consecutive quarters, the earnings update provides critical insight into how Alphabet is balancing long-term AI ambitions against near-term shareholder returns and cash generation. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Alphabet reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $127.577 billion, up 25% year over year, but roughly $623 million below the market expectation of about $128.2 billion. Google Cloud led growth, with revenue of $30.709 billion, up 103% year over year, driven by demand for enterprise AI infrastructure, AI solutions, and core Google Cloud Platform services, as well as strong sales of tensor processing unit systems. Google Services revenue rose 11% to $96.302 billion, including Search & other revenue of $63.35 billion (up 12%) and YouTube advertising revenue of $11.207 billion.
Operating income increased 30% to $40.576 billion, producing an operating margin of 31.8%. However, net income available to common shareholders declined to $26.170 billion from $34.979 billion a year earlier, and diluted EPS fell to $2.12 from $2.87, missing consensus estimates near $3.02. The shortfall largely reflected a swing in equity securities from a $10.7 billion net gain a year ago to an $8.7 billion net loss, which reduced diluted EPS by approximately $0.55. Capital expenditures reached $51.4 billion, up roughly 114% year over year, leaving free cash flow at negative $9.1 billion. From what I see, the heavy spending on AI infrastructure is the main driver behind these cash flow trends.
GOOGL stock dropped about 8% in after-hours trading following the release, reflecting investor disappointment over the revenue miss, the sharp decline in EPS, and a second consecutive quarter of negative free cash flow. Sentiment was also shaped by concerns about the sustainability of elevated capital expenditures as the company races to expand its AI infrastructure. While Google Cloud's 103% growth and 36.2% operating margin were viewed as clear positives, the drag from equity securities losses and heavy spending outweighed those gains in the immediate market response. Analysts noted that the results reinforced both the scale of Alphabet's AI opportunity and the rising costs required to pursue it.
Looking ahead, investors will focus on whether Google Cloud's rapid expansion can be sustained without eroding profitability. Cloud revenue more than doubled, and the segment's operating margin widened to 36.2%, suggesting Alphabet is converting AI demand into increasingly profitable growth. Monitoring the pace of Cloud revenue growth and its margin trajectory will be central to assessing the durability of this momentum.
Capital expenditure trends remain the most closely watched variable. With spending on property and equipment up roughly 114% year over year and free cash flow negative for a second consecutive quarter, investors will seek clarity on how long this investment phase lasts and when cash generation may return to positive territory. Management's commentary on future spending and AI infrastructure capacity will be critical. One thing that stands out is how AI tools appear to be supporting query growth in Search rather than replacing it.
Finally, the core advertising business deserves continued attention. Search & other revenue grew 12%, and Alphabet reported its highest year-over-year query growth in five years, suggesting AI tools are supporting, rather than cannibalizing, its core franchise. Sustained growth in Search and YouTube advertising, alongside disciplined cost management, will be key factors for investors to monitor in the quarters ahead.
