Amazon Web Services (AWS) has invested in semiconductor firm Wiliot Inc.
Wiliot is an Israel and San Diego-based company that produces wireless technology for tracking the location of goods during manufacturing. AWS, Samsung Venture Investment Corp. and Avery Dennison Corp. were part of the $30 million Series B funding round for the semiconductor firm. Wiliot is planning to launch a battery-free bluetooth sticker-sized sensor tag, which is expected to be embedded in the production phase of consumer goods.
Amazon’s cloud service is rapidly emerging as one of its most successful businesses. Its funding for Wiliot potentially indicates Amazon’s ambition of expanding its technology building capabilities even further. Last week, AWS acquired Israeli cloud technology startup CloudEndure, which specializes in data disaster recovery, continuous data backup and migration tools. More recently, a report in The Information suggested that Amazon is planning to launch a cloud gaming service.
