Cars.com’s third-quarter report arrives as the company continues to reposition around its core marketplace business. Management has emphasized product innovation, cost discipline, and capital returns rather than pushing for rapid top-line growth. This approach has produced steady profitability gains alongside modest revenue expansion. I’m watching closely to see if momentum in the marketplace—supported by offerings like the Carson AI shopping assistant and a new self-service starter package—can offset softness in dealer websites and OEM media. This quarter provides a useful update on whether the strategy is delivering lasting financial progress.
For the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, Cars.com reported total revenue of $181.9 million, up a marginal 0.2% from $181.6 million a year earlier and just below consensus estimates near $183 million. Dealer revenue rose 1% to $163.4 million, while OEM and national revenue fell 3% to $15.7 million, though it rebounded 15% sequentially as OEM advertising recovered as expected.
On the bottom line, adjusted EPS of $0.58 exceeded the roughly $0.54 consensus estimate, and adjusted net income rose 6% to $32.3 million. GAAP net income more than doubled to $16.3 million, or $0.30 per diluted share, versus $7.7 million, or $0.12 per share, in the prior-year period. Adjusted EBITDA grew 2% to $55.8 million, with a 30.7% margin that outperformed the high end of guidance by 120 basis points.
Marketplace revenue increased 5% year over year, marking the strongest growth rate in five years. ARPD climbed 3% to $2,532, while dealer customers declined 1% to 19,251. The company reaffirmed full-year 2026 guidance of flat to 2% revenue growth and a 29% to 30% adjusted EBITDA margin.
The post-earnings reaction reflected a mixed read on the quarter. The earnings and adjusted EBITDA beats were tempered by a slight revenue miss and a year-over-year decline in dealer customers. Investors appeared to reward the company’s margin discipline and record profitability while remaining cautious about the flat top line. Broader sentiment continues to hinge on whether marketplace growth can accelerate enough to offset ongoing pressure in point solutions such as dealer websites and trade/appraisal products, which management has indicated may not stabilize until 2027.
Looking ahead, investors should watch several key themes. The first is whether marketplace momentum holds. Marketplace revenue has now grown for five consecutive quarters, and continued adoption of the Carson AI assistant—which surpassed one million monthly users—along with the new self-service starter package could help broaden the dealer base and support ARPD.
Second, keep an eye on dealer count and the point solutions portfolio. Management has flagged near-term headwinds in websites and trade/appraisal offerings, with stabilization not expected until 2027. Any improvement in these areas would represent an important inflection.
Third, monitor guidance execution. Full-year 2026 guidance calls for revenue flat to up 2% and an adjusted EBITDA margin of 29% to 30%, with management currently steering toward the lower end on revenue and the higher end on margin.
Finally, capital allocation remains a focus. With $74 million spent on buybacks year to date and a $90 million full-year target, continued share repurchases and debt reduction could support per-share results even in a soft demand environment for automobiles.
