The Direxion Daily META Bull 2X Shares is a leveraged single-stock ETF that seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, equal to 200% of the daily performance of Meta Platforms, Inc. common shares. Launched in June 2024 and advised by Rafferty Asset Management, the fund is non-diversified and trades on the NASDAQ.
Rather than holding a broad basket, the fund concentrates its economic exposure in a single name. Under normal circumstances it invests at least 80% of its net assets in Meta securities and financial instruments — primarily total-return swaps and options — designed to deliver 2x daily leveraged exposure to META. The remainder of the portfolio consists largely of cash equivalents and U.S. Treasury instruments held as collateral for the swap positions. As a result, the fund's equity exposure is effectively 100% Communication Services, concentrated in one company.
This structure explains why METU's performance mirrors — and amplifies — Meta's daily moves. A 1% single-day move in META is designed to translate into roughly a 2% move in METU, before the fund's 1.02% net expense ratio and other costs. Investors should note that the 2x objective applies only to a single day; over longer periods, compounding and volatility can cause returns to deviate significantly from twice the underlying stock's cumulative return.
Over the last 30 days, METU has advanced roughly 26.7%, rising from around $21.18 to about $26.84 per share. The move was not a straight line: the fund rallied through the first half of September before giving back some gains mid-month and then resuming its climb. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Over the past quarter, the picture is more complex. From roughly $22.90 three months ago to about $26.84 most recently, the ETF is up approximately 17.2%. However, that net gain conceals extreme volatility. The fund surged toward $28 in early July, then plunged to a low near $17.87 in late July — a peak-to-trough decline of roughly 36% in a matter of weeks — before recovering through August and September. The quarter has been trend-like in bursts but, on balance, choppy and range-expanding, a hallmark of leveraged single-stock vehicles in a news-driven tape.
The dominant driver of METU's recent 30-day advance has been a recovery in Meta Platforms shares, amplified roughly twofold by the fund's daily leverage. After a sharp late-July selloff tied to Meta's latest quarterly results, META found support and rebounded, lifting the leveraged fund sharply higher.
Several factors underpinned the recovery in the underlying stock. Meta reported revenue growth of roughly 28% year over year — its fastest pace since late 2021 — alongside continued engagement growth across its family of apps. Investors also reassessed the company's massive AI infrastructure spending program. Meta raised its 2026 capex guidance to a range of $130 billion to $145 billion, a roughly 70% year-over-year increase directed largely at data centers, custom silicon, and computing capacity.
That spending debate cuts both ways. While the investment positions Meta to compete in AI, it has compressed near-term free cash flow and contributed to a pause in share repurchases. In the most recent 30-day stretch, however, the market's focus appeared to shift toward Meta's revenue momentum and engagement metrics, allowing META — and therefore METU — to recover. Because the ETF's entire economic exposure rests on a single stock, Meta's daily swings translate into outsized moves in the fund.
The broader three-month trend reflects a tug-of-war over Meta's AI investment cycle. Early in the quarter, the fund climbed as optimism around AI monetization lifted mega-cap technology and communication-services stocks. That advance reversed abruptly in late July, when Meta's earnings highlighted the scale of its capital spending and a steep decline in free cash flow, triggering a sharp selloff in the stock that the leveraged fund magnified.
Over the balance of the quarter, the fund rebuilt lost ground as investors weighed Meta's accelerating revenue and durable engagement against concerns about rising debt, elevated capex, and a temporarily diminished buyback. Sector rotation within large-cap technology and shifting interest-rate expectations added to the volatility. Throughout, the daily reset mechanics of the 2x structure compounded the swings, making the fund's path far more erratic than the underlying stock's.
Looking ahead, the factors most likely to shape METU are the same forces driving Meta Platforms, multiplied by leverage. First, investors will monitor the execution and returns on Meta's AI infrastructure program, including whether capital spending translates into sustained revenue growth or further pressure on margins and free cash flow. Second, the trajectory of interest rates and inflation remains important, as valuations of long-duration, high-growth technology stocks are sensitive to changes in the discount rate.
Third, Meta's engagement metrics, advertising demand, and any resumption of share repurchases will be closely watched. Fourth, regulatory and policy developments affecting large technology platforms — including antitrust scrutiny and AI governance — represent potential catalysts in either direction. Finally, capital flows into and out of leveraged single-stock products can influence the fund's trading dynamics independent of fundamentals.
Because METU resets its exposure daily, its performance can diverge sharply from the underlying stock over time, particularly in volatile conditions. Investors evaluating the fund should weigh its high-risk, short-term trading orientation against their own objectives and risk tolerance.
