TECL is a leveraged exchange-traded fund that seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, equal to 300% of the daily performance of the Technology Select Sector Index. Because the fund uses swap agreements and other instruments to deliver triple exposure, its returns reset each trading day rather than compounding in a straight line with the index over time.
The underlying benchmark is a market-capitalization-weighted basket of U.S. large-cap information technology companies, concentrated heavily in the top names. The largest positions include NVIDIA at roughly 11% of assets, Apple at about 10%, and Microsoft near 7%, followed by Broadcom, Micron, AMD, Palantir, Cisco, Lam Research, and Oracle. With effectively 100% sector exposure to information technology, the fund's fate is tightly tied to mega-cap software, hardware, and semiconductor stocks. The net expense ratio is approximately 0.87%, and the fund holds roughly $6 billion in assets under management.
Over the trailing 30 days, TECL declined approximately 11%, falling from around $230 to near $204. The move was not linear: the fund rallied into early October to an intraday peak above $250 before a rapid, leveraged sell-off pushed it below $190, followed by a partial recovery. This choppy, high-volatility path is characteristic of a 3x fund during a sector rotation.
The quarterly picture is more constructive. Roughly three months ago TECL traded near $191, meaning the fund is still up about 6% over the past quarter despite the recent reversal. In other words, the 30-day decline erased a meaningful portion of the prior rally but did not fully unwind it.
The decline was led by the fund's semiconductor-heavy exposure. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell more than 11% over a two-week stretch, recording its longest losing streak since 2008, while roughly $2 trillion of chip-market value was erased in a matter of sessions. Within the benchmark, NVIDIA dropped about 8.5%, AMD around 16%, and Micron more than 18%, even as Apple and Microsoft held up better.
The catalyst was renewed scrutiny of AI infrastructure financing. Concerns mounted over debt-funded data-center operators, with one prominent neocloud provider's bond yields climbing above 15% and its credit-default swap costs spiking as its share price fell. That repricing hit suppliers of AI hardware hardest, including memory and GPU makers.
The macro backdrop compounded the pressure. September CPI accelerated to 3.7% year over year, with core CPI at 2.6%, while PPI rose 6.3% annually, rekindling inflation fears as oil prices pushed higher. With the 10-year Treasury yield trading above 5% and markets pricing additional Federal Reserve hikes, high-multiple technology and semiconductor valuations came under pressure. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
The broader three-month trend reflects the market's evolving view of the artificial-intelligence capital-expenditure cycle. Through August and September, AI-linked demand supported a strong rally in chipmakers and mega-cap tech, lifting the underlying index and amplifying TECL's gains through leverage. Institutional positioning grew crowded, and technology became one of the most favored equity exposures.
In October, that enthusiasm reversed as investors began questioning whether debt-financed AI buildouts could generate adequate returns in a higher-rate environment. The rotation favored defensive sectors such as staples and energy while technology lagged. The result was a quarter characterized by a sharp advance followed by a concentrated correction, with the fund's 3x structure magnifying both the upside and the subsequent drawdown.
The most important variable for TECL going forward is the path of interest rates and inflation. With core inflation running above target and markets anticipating further Fed tightening, any upside surprise in CPI, PPI, or energy prices could renew pressure on the fund's high-multiple holdings. Conversely, a sustained decline in Treasury yields would likely ease the strain on debt-financed AI infrastructure and support a rebound in semiconductor names.
Earnings from the fund's largest holdings will be a key test, particularly commentary on AI capital spending and the health of cloud and data-center customers. Investors should also monitor financing conditions for AI infrastructure providers, memory-chip pricing and competition dynamics, and whether the recent rotation away from technology continues or reverses. Because TECL resets daily and offers 3x exposure, volatility is a structural feature: even a modest move in the underlying index can produce outsized swings in fund value, making position sizing and time horizon critical considerations. From what I see, this is important because the leverage effect can quickly turn modest index moves into larger fund swings.
In my own research process, I turn to Tickeron’s AI Screener to quickly scan for patterns across leveraged ETFs and the broader technology sector. The platform combines technical indicators, fundamentals, volatility metrics, and AI-generated signals to surface ideas that match specific market conditions. It has helped me compare TECL’s behavior against similar instruments and identify potential entry or exit points more efficiently than manual screening alone. For anyone tracking daily-reset leveraged products or sector rotations, it offers a practical way to organize the data.
