The news from Twitter’s meeting last week at their headquarters described as the strategy session “Thinking about Values” are rather upsetting. While it was held behind the closed doors, bits and pieces of that discussion have leaked. We have been under the impression that their policies regarding the standards for publications are much more advanced. Indeed, it seems that they are just starting to address the problems of hate speech, violence, hate language and other related issues. While Apple, Spotify, Facebook, Instagram and others have quickly banned Alex Jones, Twitter is still thinking.
Twitter also requested that the names of participants in the meeting should not be disclosed fearing the hate mail to these individuals. The conflict between the first amendment and what can and cannot be said is far from having a simple solution. We hope that Twitter will quickly move towards meaningful compromise.
