Illinois Tool Works operates as a diversified global manufacturer across seven segments, ranging from automotive and food equipment to welding and electronics. Its third-quarter results provide a useful test of how durable the manufacturing recovery remains in capex-driven areas, even while rate- and consumer-sensitive segments encounter headwinds. Following a record second quarter, I was interested to see whether margin momentum, customer-back innovation, and order trends would continue. The update also offers a broader signal for the industrial sector on demand in semiconductors, data-center construction, and general industrial markets, and management raised guidance for the third time this year.
ITW posted total revenue of $4.236 billion for the third quarter of 2026, up 4.4% from a year earlier. Growth came from 3.8% organic expansion plus smaller contributions from currency and an acquisition. GAAP EPS reached $3.00, a 7% increase from $2.81, which beat the consensus range of roughly $2.97–$2.99. Operating income climbed 5.9% to $1.177 billion, a new quarterly record, and operating margin widened 40 basis points to 27.8%. Free cash flow totaled $851 million, or 100% of net income.
Results were strongest in Test & Measurement and Electronics, which grew 16% organically (electronics alone up 31%), and Polymers & Fluids, up 8%. Welding advanced 7% organically—an estimated 15% excluding the tornado impact—while Automotive OEM, Construction Products, and Specialty Products each declined 1% to 2% organically. Management raised full-year EPS guidance by $0.05 to a narrowed range of $11.45–$11.55 and increased total revenue growth guidance to 4.5%–5.5%. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Despite the record operating income and upward guidance revision, ITW shares slipped about 2% in pre-market trading. The initial reaction appeared to reflect some profit-taking after a strong run, caution around softer segments such as Automotive OEM and Construction Products, and ongoing price-cost pressures. Investors also considered the one-time tornado disruption and its insurance offset. Broader sentiment stays constructive, helped by accelerating orders in Welding and Test & Measurement and Electronics, though some analysts have grown more cautious on valuation ahead of the print.
ITW enters the fourth quarter with solid momentum. Management expects organic growth of 5% or more in Q4, pointing to full-year organic growth of 3%–4%, and projects operating margins in the mid-to-high 27% range. Enterprise initiatives should contribute more than 100 basis points for the year, with free cash flow conversion near 100% of net income.
Several areas deserve attention in coming quarters. First, track the recovery in Welding, where order growth is outpacing revenue and margins should return to typical best-in-class levels after the disruption. Second, monitor the durability of electronics and semiconductor demand, which management links to rising AI-driven investment in chip manufacturing and printed-circuit-board production. Price-cost dynamics also matter; management sees price-cost as roughly neutral to margins for 2026 before turning into a modest tailwind in 2027, with resin, steel, and electronic-component inflation still in the 4%–5% range. Finally, the pace of customer-back innovation—now adding more than 3% to revenue growth—remains central to the company’s longer-term target of sustained 4%-plus organic growth and 30% operating margins by 2030.
