Intel Corporation stands as one of the largest semiconductor firms, designing and producing x86 processors for PCs and data centers through its Core, Ultra, and Xeon lines. It also offers networking solutions, AI accelerators, and operates Intel Foundry to manufacture chips for itself and outside clients.
With CEO Lip-Bu Tan at the helm, the company is advancing an integrated approach that includes heavy investment in process nodes like 18A and 14A plus packaging methods such as EMIB-T. The stock draws attention because Intel sits at the crossroads of AI-driven data center growth and efforts to strengthen U.S. semiconductor manufacturing.
Over the last 30 days, INTC declined about 13.4%, moving from a September 18, 2026 close of $108.60 down to roughly $94.04 in mid-October. The drop picked up speed in early October after a late-September rebound faded.
Looking back three months from a mid-July close near $95.04, the stock is essentially flat with a decline of about 1%. Yet volatility tells a bigger story: shares dropped to around $82 in late July, climbed to a September 24 high of $127.39, and then retreated sharply in October. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
The pullback stemmed mainly from sector-wide pressures rather than Intel-specific issues. Hotter U.S. inflation readings, with the September CPI up 3.7% year over year and producer prices rising 6.3%, raised worries that the Federal Reserve might hold rates higher for longer. This environment weighed most on high-multiple chip names, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index posted its longest losing streak since 2008.
Company events added to the strain. A fatal explosion involving nitrogen trifluoride gas occurred on October 14 at Intel's Kiryat Gat fab in Israel, creating uncertainty around that facility's output. Separately, TSMC (TSM) indicated it could assist customers with advanced packaging, which could challenge Intel's EMIB-T plans. Questions around the foundry strategy resurfaced after discussions linked to Tesla (TSLA) and Terafab expanded to include TSMC. Longer-term concerns persist as well: Intel's share of server x86 CPU revenue has slipped from 77% to 53% since late 2022, while external foundry revenue stays small at under $1 billion annualized in the first half of 2026 compared with roughly $150 billion for TSMC. On a positive note, JPMorgan upgraded the stock to Neutral from Underweight in mid-October, pointing to better execution under the new CEO.
Across the full quarter, Intel's narrative centered on solid operational progress offset by a tougher macro setting for AI and chip valuations. Second-quarter results delivered the strongest revenue growth in more than 15 years, with total revenue rising 25% year over year to $16.1 billion and Data Center and AI revenue jumping 59% to $6.3 billion.
Optimism around the 18A ramp and AI demand helped lift the stock from late-July lows toward the September peak above $127. Still, the rally faced practical hurdles, including a $20 billion equity raise in August at $95 per share that introduced dilution concerns and ongoing operating losses in the foundry segment. The October macro shift then reversed much of the quarter's advance.
Intel is set to report third-quarter results on October 29, with guidance for revenue between $15.8 billion and $16.8 billion, non-GAAP gross margin near 42%, and non-GAAP EPS of about $0.38. Investors will focus on whether results come in at the upper end and what management says about the fourth quarter.
Additional factors include any production effects from the Kiryat Gat incident, success in winning external foundry business for the 18A and 14A nodes, capital spending levels and their impact on free cash flow, and the durability of AI infrastructure spending. Broader economic conditions, especially inflation and interest-rate trends, along with competition from AMD (AMD) and NVIDIA (NVDA), will continue to influence valuation.
