Lam Research is a leading supplier of wafer fabrication equipment, and its results are closely watched as a barometer for semiconductor capital spending. The company's fiscal year runs from July through June, so the quarter ended September 27, 2026 is its first quarter of fiscal 2027. This report matters because Lam Research has now posted five consecutive quarters of record revenue, powered by surging demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips and increasingly complex devices. Investors are watching whether the company can sustain this momentum, expand its share of the wafer fabrication equipment (WFE) market, and convert record sales into durable profitability as memory and foundry customers continue to build out capacity. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Lam Research reported revenue of $8.22 billion for the September quarter, up 22% sequentially from $6.72 billion and 54% year over year, edging past the consensus estimate of approximately $8.13 billion. Non-GAAP diluted EPS of $2.20 narrowly beat analyst expectations of $2.18, while GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) diluted EPS was $2.19.
Profitability hit new highs. Non-GAAP gross margin expanded 40 basis points (0.40 percentage points) quarter over quarter to 52.4%, and non-GAAP operating margin rose to 40.2%, the first time the company has exceeded 40%. Systems revenue climbed sharply to $5.73 billion, while the Customer Support Business Group (CSBG) posted a fourth consecutive record at nearly $2.5 billion. By segment, memory represented 46% of systems revenue and foundry a further 46%, with logic and other applications at 8%. Regionally, China led at 35% of revenue, followed by Korea at 20% and Taiwan at 18%.
Free cash flow reached a record $3.24 billion, and management returned over $1.3 billion to shareholders through dividends and roughly $1 billion in share repurchases.
The market's response to Lam Research's report underscored how high expectations had become. Even though revenue, EPS, and forward guidance all landed slightly above consensus, the stock dropped roughly 6% in after-hours trading. Analysts attributed the decline to a "sell-the-news" dynamic: the beat was relatively narrow, the December-quarter guidance range was wide, and the shares had already gained nearly 80% over the prior year heading into the print. This left little room for error, prompting profit-taking despite what was fundamentally a strong quarter. The reaction highlights that investors are now demanding more convincing upside rather than simply in-line beats to justify valuations across the semiconductor equipment sector.
For the December quarter, Lam Research guided revenue to $8.6 billion, plus or minus $400 million, with non-GAAP gross margin of 52.5% and operating margin of 40.5%, both plus or minus one percentage point. The company expects non-GAAP EPS of $2.33, plus or minus $0.15.
Management signaled that the December-quarter outlook would have been higher absent supply chain constraints on certain components, a factor investors should monitor closely. Lam Research also raised its longer-term view of the industry, now projecting WFE spending in the mid-$150 billion range for calendar 2026 and a preliminary outlook of more than $200 billion for calendar 2027.
Looking further ahead, key themes include the continued adoption of AI, which management says is driving rising deposition and etch intensity across all device types, and the ramp of advanced packaging technologies such as panel-level packaging. The company also lifted its cumulative revenue outlook for its Aether dry resist solution to roughly $2.5 billion by the end of the decade. On the other side of the ledger, investors should watch China's revenue contribution, which management expects to decline significantly in the December quarter, and the trajectory of operating margins as the business continues to scale.
In my view, tools like this can help put individual earnings reports into broader context. I recently used Tickeron’s AI Screener to scan semiconductor equipment names and related ETFs, applying filters for revenue growth, margins, and technical patterns. It surfaced a handful of comparable names that showed similar strength in AI-driven demand, which helped me think about positioning within the group without having to build a custom screen from scratch. The platform’s ability to combine fundamentals with AI signals makes it a practical addition to the research process for anyone following this space.
