METU is a single-stock leveraged exchange-traded fund that seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, equal to 200% of the daily performance of the common shares of Meta Platforms, Inc. (META). Launched in June 2024, the fund is passively managed and pursues its objective using a combination of Meta securities, swap agreements, and options, with a net expense ratio of roughly 1.02%.
Unlike diversified equity ETFs, METU does not hold a broad basket of stocks. Its exposure is concentrated in a single underlying company, Meta, alongside the derivative and cash instruments used to deliver 2X daily leverage. As of late 2026, the fund's assets under management were around $550 million. This concentrated, leverage-driven structure means the fund's portfolio characteristics are dominated entirely by Meta's sector exposure—communication services—and by the mechanics of daily rebalancing rather than by traditional diversification. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the fund stacks up against other leveraged products in the sector.
Over the last 30 days, METU fell approximately 27%, moving from the low-$30 range to the low-$20 range. The decline was amplified by the fund's 2X leverage: Meta's own shares fell roughly 14% over the same period, and the daily-reset structure of METU magnified the move.
The picture looks different over the trailing quarter, where METU gained roughly 25%. That divergence reflects volatility rather than a clean trend. The fund traded near $17–$18 in late July before rallying to an intraday peak around $35 in late September, only to give back a large portion of those gains through October. In short, the last three months have been a sharp up-and-down cycle, while the last 30 days captured the downward leg.
The primary driver was Meta's third-quarter earnings report, released in late October. The company posted revenue of $64.6 billion, up 26% year over year and above consensus, with advertising revenue of $63.1 billion. However, investor focus shifted to spending and capital structure. Meta reported capital expenditures of $34.9 billion for the quarter, up roughly 80% year over year, and raised the low end of its full-year 2026 capital spending guidance to a range of $135 billion to $145 billion.
That investment pushed free cash flow to negative $2.12 billion—the company's first negative FCF since its 2012 IPO—compared with positive FCF of about $10.6 billion a year earlier. Results also included a $9.89 billion litigation charge tied to a settlement with U.S. state attorneys general over teen mental health and social media claims, which cut operating margin roughly in half. Separately, a judge ordered Meta to pay a $25 billion penalty in a data-privacy case, a ruling Meta said it would appeal.
Meta also announced plans to create a new non-voting Class C share, distributed as a stock dividend effective January 2027. Investors interpreted the structure as a vehicle for future equity financing, adding dilution concerns to an already nervous tape. Meta shares fell about 7% in a single session following the report, dragging METU sharply lower and contributing to a broad retreat across technology and AI-related equities.
The trailing three months tell a broader story of AI-driven optimism followed by a reassessment of funding and returns. After Meta's mid-summer earnings report triggered a sharp selloff that pushed METU toward the high teens, shares recovered through August and September as strong advertising momentum and enthusiasm around Meta's AI products, including its personal assistant and frontier models, lifted the stock toward a 52-week high near $780. METU's leveraged structure translated that rally into a move above $35.
October reversed the momentum. The market's focus shifted from AI revenue potential to the cost of funding the buildout—surfacing in Meta's negative FCF, rising long-term debt, and the new share class. Rising credit spreads and a broader pullback in AI-infrastructure names compounded the pressure. For METU, this translated into a partial round-trip of its earlier gains, illustrating how quickly leveraged single-stock ETFs can unwind when sentiment toward a single issuer shifts.
The factors most likely to influence METU in the months ahead flow directly from Meta's fundamentals. Investors will be watching whether AI capital spending translates into measurable revenue and free cash flow recovery, and whether management moderates or extends its buildout plans. Meta's Q4 revenue guidance and its 2027 spending signals will be key, as will the January 2027 implementation of the Class C share distribution and any appeal outcomes in the company's litigation.
Beyond Meta, the macroeconomic environment—interest rate expectations, inflation trends, and credit-market conditions—will shape sentiment toward capital-intensive technology and AI-infrastructure equities. Given METU's 2X daily reset, volatility itself is a structural consideration: even if Meta's shares recover, the fund's path-dependent returns can differ from twice the underlying move over holding periods longer than a day. As a result, this ETF is best understood as a short-term tactical instrument for expressing a directional view on Meta, rather than a long-term portfolio holding.
In my own research, Tickeron’s AI Screener has become a practical way to scan for leveraged products like METU and compare their volatility profiles against sector peers. It lets me apply custom filters for performance, patterns, and fundamentals in one place, which helps put single-stock moves into broader context without manual number crunching.
