NKE shares closed around $38.67 in late October 2026, up about 9.2% from the roughly $35.40 level recorded a month earlier. The rebound, however, followed a dramatic sell-off: after reporting fiscal first-quarter results on October 1, the stock tumbled more than 8% and briefly touched a 13-year intraday low of $31.97 on October 2 before recovering. The shares still trade far below their 2021 peak of roughly $179 and remain down about 45% year to date, making Nike one of the weakest performers among large-cap consumer discretionary names. A dividend yield near 4.4% and a depressed valuation have attracted bargain-oriented buyers, but the recovery in the share price has so far reflected a stabilization rather than a clear inflection in the underlying business.
Nike, Inc., headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon, is the world's largest designer, marketer, and distributor of athletic footwear, apparel, equipment, and accessories. The company operates through its flagship Nike brand, the Jordan brand, and Converse, selling across wholesale partners, its own retail stores, and direct-to-consumer digital platforms such as the SNKRS app and Nike Training Club. As a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nike is widely followed as a bellwether for global consumer discretionary spending. Its competitive strengths include unmatched brand recognition, a broad global distribution network, and deep partnerships across professional sports. At the same time, the company faces intensifying competition from challengers such as On Holding (ONON), Deckers (DECK) with its Hoka brand, Adidas (ADDYY), and Lululemon (LULU), which have been gaining share in key running and lifestyle categories. Nike's fiscal 2027 first-quarter report, released October 1, set the tone for the stock's recent action. Revenue came in at $11.2 billion, down about 4% year over year and below the consensus estimate of roughly $11.32 billion. Adjusted earnings per share of $0.48 beat the $0.44 analysts expected but fell 2% from a year earlier. More consequential was the guidance: management projected a high-single-digit revenue decline for fiscal 2027, well below the roughly 2% decline Wall Street had modeled, and forecast adjusted earnings per share of $1.15 to $1.35 versus expectations near $1.69.
China was the central concern. Currency-neutral revenue in Greater China dropped 26%, extending a multi-quarter slide as local competitors gain ground, and Chief Financial Officer Dave Denton warned the region could weaken further through the remainder of the year. Converse sales fell 28%, the Jordan brand declined by a mid-teens percentage, and Nike Direct revenue slipped 8%. North America was a relative bright spot, growing modestly.
In response, Nike announced the "Pace" restructuring plan, consolidating four operating regions into three and targeting about $2.5 billion in cumulative cost savings through fiscal 2031, with job reductions beginning in 2027. Shortly afterward, S&P Global Ratings cut Nike's credit rating to A from A+ with a negative outlook, pointing to excess wholesale inventory and a longer-than-expected recovery in China, the Jordan brand, and sportswear. Multiple analysts lowered price targets, with Guggenheim trimming its target from $60 to $50 and Berenberg downgrading the stock to a sell with a $27.50 target. A mid-October rotation out of richly valued technology shares briefly lifted Nike more than 6% as investors favored beaten-down value names. From what I see, this rotation offered a temporary lift but did not change the core fundamentals.
Heading into 2026, the key question for Nike is whether the Pace restructuring can stabilize the top line while margins remain under pressure. Investors will watch the next quarterly report, expected in December 2026, for evidence that the sportswear cleanup is progressing and that performance categories such as running, football, tennis, and golf continue their double-digit growth. China will remain a focal point, given management's warning of further near-term weakness and the structural shift toward domestic competitors. Macroeconomic factors, including tariff costs on imported goods, inflation, and consumer spending on discretionary categories, also loom over the outlook. Finally, the company's stated commitment to its dividend — which has exceeded free cash flow in recent periods — and any further credit-rating actions will be closely monitored alongside analyst revisions to price targets and earnings estimates. I’m watching this closely for signs of stabilization.
