Norfolk Southern’s third-quarter report offers a useful snapshot of how one of North America’s leading freight railroads is turning a supportive freight environment into revenue gains while dealing with sharply higher fuel costs and ongoing merger-related expenses. The company serves as an important indicator of industrial activity, moving chemicals, metals, automotive products, intermodal containers, and coal across the eastern United States. With manufacturing activity expanding and trucking capacity tightening, investors are assessing whether rail operators can capture more freight from highways and convert volume growth into better margins. The results also come against the backdrop of a proposed merger with Union Pacific, which adds strategic context to how the market views operational execution and cost control.
For the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, Norfolk Southern reported railway operating revenue of $3.526 billion, a 14% increase from $3.103 billion a year earlier and a new quarterly record. About eight points of that growth stemmed from higher fuel surcharges. Total volume rose 3%, with each of the three business groups—merchandise, intermodal, and coal—posting 3% gains. To put these numbers in context, I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Diluted EPS was $3.37, up 7% from $3.16 a year ago. After adjusting for $42 million in merger-related expenses and $28 million in net costs tied to the Eastern Ohio incident, adjusted diluted EPS reached $3.62, up 10% year over year and roughly 4% above the consensus estimate of $3.48. Adjusted income from railway operations increased 7% to $1.22 billion.
The main challenge came from costs. The reported operating ratio was 67.4%, compared with 64.6% a year earlier. On an adjusted basis, the operating ratio stood at 65.4%, up 210 basis points, as fuel expenses jumped 77% to $420 million. Management noted that elevated fuel prices negatively affected the operating ratio by about 250 basis points relative to prior expectations.
Norfolk Southern shares rose about 2.3% to $335.62 following the announcement, trading near the upper end of the stock’s 52-week range of $277.80 to $358.60. The move reflected a positive reaction to the revenue and EPS beats, even as the higher operating ratio and elevated fuel costs drew attention. Sentiment heading into the report had been constructive, supported by a tightening truck market and strong industrial demand; the confirmation of record revenue and broad-based volume growth reinforced that view. At the same time, investors weighed the top-line strength against the fact that a meaningful portion of the growth was fuel-surcharge driven and that margins faced pressure from inflation in compensation and benefits costs.
Norfolk Southern enters the rest of 2026 with a positive but measured outlook. Management expects coal growth to be led by its export franchise, supported by favorable utility market conditions as customers rebuild stockpiles. Industrial development activity remains ahead of last year, and manufacturing has now expanded for nine consecutive months.
At the same time, the company raised its full-year 2026 adjusted operating expense guidance to approximately $9 billion, up from an original range of $8.2 billion to $8.4 billion, largely because of roughly $700 million in incremental fuel costs and higher volumes. Capital expenditures were also increased to about $2.1 billion from $1.9 billion as the railroad accelerates targeted investments to support volume growth and service levels.
Investors will want to monitor several factors in the quarters ahead. Fuel prices remain a major variable—management has cautioned that elevated energy costs could eventually soften customer demand even as they boost near-term energy-related traffic. The durability of truck-to-rail conversion gains is also uncertain, with executives noting that some highway-to-rail freight could revert to trucking if fuel prices normalize. Progress on cost discipline and the company’s cumulative cost-savings target of at least $650 million will be central to margin improvement. Finally, network fluidity and service metrics—which improved sequentially but remain below year-ago levels—will be closely watched as Norfolk Southern works to deliver reliable service while handling higher volumes.
