S&P Global is a leading provider of financial information, ratings, benchmarks, and analytics across the credit, equity, and commodity markets. Its business spans four reportable segments: S&P Global Ratings, S&P Dow Jones Indices, Market Intelligence, and Commodity Insights. The company’s competitive strengths include essential market infrastructure such as the S&P 500 and Dow Jones indices, a dominant credit-ratings franchise, and proprietary datasets that customers increasingly license for AI applications. Investors follow SPGI closely because its recurring subscription and asset-linked revenue offers broad exposure to global capital-markets activity, ETF growth, and the rising demand for trusted, AI-ready data. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Over the last 30 days, SPGI climbed about 18.3%, rising from a closing price of $394.47 to $466.55. The advance was broadly consistent: shares bottomed near $386 in early October and then recovered steadily through the month, with additional momentum following the company’s third-quarter earnings release.
The quarterly picture is more mixed. Measured from roughly $415 at the start of August, the stock has gained approximately 12% over the trailing three months, but the path was far from linear. After peaking near $450 in early September, SPGI pulled back to around $386 by early October before staging a sharp rebound into late October. In short, the recent 30-day surge largely reflects a recovery from that early-October low, layered on top of a modestly positive three-month trend.
The most important catalyst was S&P Global’s third-quarter earnings report on October 27. The company posted revenue of $3.678 billion, up 7% year over year, and adjusted diluted EPS of $4.58, beating consensus estimates. Management raised its full-year outlook, lifting organic constant-currency revenue growth guidance to 7.5%–8.5% and adjusted EPS guidance to $17.70–$17.95.
Several underlying drivers supported the move. S&P Dow Jones Indices grew revenue 20%, aided by record ETF AUM of $6.5 trillion and a 15% increase in exchange-traded derivative volumes. The company also announced a strategic review of Capital IQ and its associated data businesses, including a potential separation, signaling a sharper focus on its core credit, equity, and commodity franchises. AI monetization continued to build, with API call volume up nearly 50% sequentially and AI customers expanding annual contract value at roughly 1.8 times the rate of non-AI clients in Market Intelligence. Aggressive capital returns—about $4 billion in buybacks year-to-date, on track to exceed $7 billion—added further support.
The broader three-month trend reflects strength in S&P Global’s benchmark and data franchises against a backdrop of elevated market volatility. Strong ETF inflows and record index-linked AUM supported the Indices segment, while hyperscaler-related debt issuance—roughly $240 billion year-to-date—reinforced the Ratings business. Demand for AI-ready data accelerated across Market Intelligence and Commodity Insights, and a 25-year extension of the Cboe options agreement on the S&P 500 underscored the durability of the company’s index franchise.
The quarter also featured a meaningful setback. Shares pulled back from early-September highs through early October amid higher Treasury yields, a temporary elongation in some Market Intelligence sales cycles, and broader risk-off conditions, before recovering as earnings and guidance reasserted confidence. Oil prices hovering near $100 per barrel and geopolitical uncertainty kept the Commodity Insights environment volatile, even as energy renewals normalized to pre-conflict levels.
Looking ahead, investors are likely to monitor execution against the raised 2026 guidance, particularly full-year hyperscaler issuance, which management expects in the $250–$300 billion range. The outcome and timing of the Capital IQ strategic review—with more detail expected around the February earnings call—could reshape the company’s portfolio and financial profile. AI monetization remains a key watch item, including continued growth in API call volumes and AI customer contract values. Other factors to track include debt-refinancing demand, M&A-related issuance, interest-rate movements, oil and commodity-market volatility, and the pace of share repurchases. As with any equity, macroeconomic conditions and regulatory developments could introduce additional variability. From what I see, I’m watching this closely as the strategic review unfolds.
