The T-Rex 2X Long MSTR Daily Target ETF is a leveraged single-stock exchange-traded fund that seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, of 200% of the daily performance of Strategy Inc. (MSTR), the business-intelligence and Bitcoin treasury company formerly known as MicroStrategy. Launched in September 2024, the fund is non-diversified and carries a net expense ratio of 1.05%.
Rather than holding a broad basket of securities, MSTU concentrates its exposure in a single reference stock. The fund uses total return swap contracts to obtain approximately 200% market exposure to MSTR, with the bulk of its reported assets held in cash and short-term instruments such as Treasury bills. Because Strategy's equity value is itself closely tied to the price of Bitcoin (BTC), MSTU effectively provides geared, daily-reset exposure to Bitcoin price movements through a corporate treasury lens. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the fund stacks up against other leveraged vehicles in the space.
This structure explains the fund's outsized swings. A 1% daily move in MSTR translates to roughly 2% in MSTU before fees, and the daily reset of leverage means performance over periods longer than one day reflects compounding rather than a simple multiple of MSTR's cumulative return. The fund also completed a 1-for-10 reverse stock split in December 2025.
Over the last 30 days, MSTU advanced approximately 35%, rising from a close of $29.36 to $39.70. The move was not linear: the fund rallied sharply in the second half of September before pulling back from an intraday peak near $50 and then stabilizing in the low $40s.
The quarterly trend was even more pronounced. From a mid-July close near $18.75, MSTU gained roughly 112% to $39.70. This extended rebound followed a difficult first half of the year, when declining Bitcoin valuations and heavy unrealized losses weighed on the underlying stock and, in turn, on the leveraged fund. The recent advance has been trend-driven and volatile rather than gradual, consistent with the fund's two-times daily leverage.
The primary catalyst behind the 30-day move was a sharp recovery in Bitcoin and its knock-on effect on MSTR. Bitcoin rallied through the third quarter, and a late-September regulatory development accelerated the advance: the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission granted a five-year exemption allowing select platforms to trade tokenized U.S. stocks on the blockchain. The announcement contributed to a wave of short-position liquidations that pushed Bitcoin above $85,000 and lifted crypto-linked equities in lockstep.
Strategy reinforced the momentum by resuming Bitcoin purchases. The company reported acquiring 950 Bitcoin over one week and later added another 334 coins, bringing its total holdings to 848,000 BTC as of early October, acquired at an average price of roughly $75,441 per coin. Management also disclosed a preliminary third-quarter unrealized digital-asset gain of approximately $20.91 billion, marking a return to profitability after several quarters of valuation-driven losses.
Analyst activity supported sentiment as well. Barclays raised its price target on MSTR, and U.S. spot Bitcoin funds recorded strong weekly inflows. For MSTU, the combination of a rising underlying stock and daily-reset leverage amplified the move well beyond the single stock's own gain.
Over the full quarter, MSTU's advance tracked a broader rotation back into Bitcoin-linked assets. Strategy expanded its treasury from about 672,500 BTC at the end of 2025 to 848,000 BTC, while simultaneously improving its financing flexibility by reducing convertible debt and building a multi-billion-dollar cash reserve to service preferred dividends and interest obligations.
The recovery stood in contrast to other Bitcoin-adjacent names. While MSTR climbed roughly 60% over three months, U.S.-listed miners such as RIOT and CLSK declined over the same stretch, highlighting how Strategy's treasury model differs from mining economics. Institutional capital returning to spot Bitcoin funds provided a further tailwind, although dilution from new share issuance tempered the per-share benefit of additional Bitcoin purchases.
MSTU's forward path remains tightly linked to Bitcoin prices and to Strategy's ability to fund its treasury strategy on acceptable terms. Investors should monitor Bitcoin's sustained range, corporate and institutional accumulation, and the pace of Strategy's capital raising, since new share issuance can dilute the per-share value of its Bitcoin holdings. Regulatory developments around tokenized securities and digital assets, interest rate expectations, and overall risk appetite in growth-oriented markets also matter, given the fund's amplified sensitivity.
Risks are substantial. Daily leverage and the compounding effect mean MSTU can lose value even when MSTR is flat over time, and the fund is designed for short holding periods rather than long-term buy-and-hold positioning. Macroeconomic conditions, inflation trends, and monetary policy shifts that influence risk sentiment can drive pronounced two-sided volatility. The most important watch items are Bitcoin price direction, Strategy's earnings and treasury disclosures, and broader capital flows into crypto-linked assets.
