USO is an exchange-traded commodity pool structured as a Delaware limited partnership and listed on NYSE Arca. Managed by United States Commodity Funds LLC, it seeks to have the daily percentage changes of its net asset value (NAV) reflect daily percentage changes in the spot price of light sweet crude oil delivered to Cushing, Oklahoma, as measured by near-month NYMEX (New York Mercantile Exchange) WTI futures contracts, plus interest earned on collateral and less fund expenses.
Rather than holding energy stocks, USO invests in front-month WTI crude futures and, to a lesser extent, over-the-counter swaps and other oil-related instruments, with the balance held in cash, US Treasury bills, and government money market funds as collateral. Its largest positions are therefore crude oil futures contracts and cash-equivalent instruments rather than individual companies, and its sector exposure is effectively 100% energy commodities tied to WTI crude. The fund manages roughly $1.8 billion in assets under management (AUM) and carries a net expense ratio of approximately 0.70%.
This structure means USO's returns depend overwhelmingly on the price of WTI crude and the shape of the futures curve, not on corporate earnings or equity-sector rotation. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the fund compares to other commodity vehicles in the space.
Over the trailing 30 days, USO rose about +12.8%, from a closing price near $144.08 to approximately $162.49. Over the full trailing quarter, the advance was larger at roughly +23.4%, reflecting a sustained uptrend punctuated by bouts of volatility. The path was not linear: crude pulled back in late September before reasserting its upward trend through October on renewed supply concerns.
The 30-day window is best characterized as trend-driven and volatile, with sharp intraday swings responding to headlines around Middle East shipping lanes and weekly US inventory data rather than a gradual, low-volatility grind.
Because USO tracks WTI crude futures, its recent gain mirrors the rally in oil itself. Several supply-side forces converged:
Collectively, these factors pushed WTI from the high-$80s toward roughly $100 per barrel during the period, directly lifting USO's net asset value.
Over the trailing three months, USO's roughly +23.4% gain reflects a broader, more persistent repricing of the oil market. Longer-term themes—sustained OPEC+ voluntary production cuts, depleted OECD and US strategic inventories, structural diesel tightness, and an elevated geopolitical risk premium—dominated the quarter, outweighing periodic signs that Middle East exports were recovering.
Because USO rolls near-month futures contracts each month, the shape of the futures curve also influenced returns. In a market where near-term supply fears dominate, curve behavior can add to or subtract from spot-price gains. Fund flows and speculative positioning followed the commodity trend, amplifying momentum as energy emerged as one of the stronger corners of the market over the period.
Several factors will likely shape USO over the coming months. The most important is the status of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and any progress in US-Iran diplomacy, since a resolution could unwind a meaningful portion of the geopolitical premium. Investors should also monitor OPEC+ decisions on 2027 production quotas and the pace at which actual supply reaches the market.
On the demand side, OPEC has trimmed its 2026 global demand-growth outlook, and economic growth, interest rate expectations, and the path of the US dollar will continue to influence crude. Inventory levels, refinery utilization, and diesel balances remain key indicators of tightness. Finally, because USO holds futures, the shape of the curve—contango versus backwardation—will materially affect long-term returns independent of spot prices. None of this constitutes a forecast of future performance, but these themes are likely to define USO's risk and return environment. From what I see, the futures curve remains an especially important variable to track here.
I regularly turn to Tickeron’s AI-powered platforms when analyzing commodity funds like this. The AI Screener helps me quickly compare technical signals and performance metrics across energy vehicles without manually reviewing each one, which saves time and highlights relative strength or weakness in the sector. It has become a standard part of my workflow for spotting patterns in macro-driven assets.
