WGMI is an actively managed, non-diversified exchange-traded fund that invests at least 80% of its net assets in Bitcoin Mining and Digital Power Companies. Following a strategy update effective August 11, 2026, the fund—formerly the CoinShares Bitcoin Mining ETF—broadened its universe to include companies materially involved in bitcoin mining, hyperscale data centers, AI-focused semiconductors and components, power generation and energy infrastructure, and high-performance computing. The fund does not invest directly in bitcoin.
The fund carries a net expense ratio of 0.75% and held roughly 25 to 27 positions with about $274 million in net assets as of late September 2026. Recent top holdings included Cipher Digital (CIFR), IREN (IREN), TeraWulf (WULF), CoreWeave (CRWV), Hut 8 (HUT), and Nebius Group, alongside Core Scientific (CORZ), CleanSpark (CLSK), and Riot Platforms (RIOT). The portfolio is concentrated in information technology and digital-infrastructure industries.
This structure is central to the recent selloff: the fund now pairs highly volatile bitcoin-mining economics with capital-intensive AI data-center exposure, both of which are sensitive to interest rates and bitcoin price swings. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Over the trailing 30 days, WGMI declined roughly 35%, from about $44.93 to near $29. The move was sharp rather than gradual, with the steepest losses concentrated in mid-October. The decline is part of a broader three-month downtrend: from a late-July level near $52.87, the fund has fallen approximately 45%.
The pattern was trend-driven and punctuated by elevated single-day volatility, reflecting the leveraged sensitivity of underlying miners and data-center operators to macro headlines rather than a slow, range-bound drift.
Several forces converged. First, hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data—September CPI rose 3.7% year over year—revived Federal Reserve rate-hike concerns and pushed the 10-year Treasury yield to roughly 5.15%, among its highest levels in years. Higher yields raise borrowing costs and discount future lease income, directly pressuring debt-funded AI data-center and mining operators such as Cipher Digital (CIFR), CoreWeave (CRWV), IREN (IREN), and TeraWulf (WULF).
Second, bitcoin traded lower, dipping below $81,000 at times, while mining difficulty rose about 6%—a squeeze that reduced miner margins. A report that MARA Holdings (MARA) sold bitcoin added to the cautious tone. Third, the AI-infrastructure complex itself derated: a forecast of a neocloud shakeout and falling GPU prices sparked sell ratings and a rise in short interest across data-center landlords.
The three-month trend reflects a sector rotation away from capital-intensive, rate-sensitive digital-infrastructure and bitcoin-mining equities. The fund's mid-2026 highs unwound as markets repriced the financing and counterparty risks embedded in the AI data-center buildout. Rising short interest in data-center landlords and heavy reliance on debt and convertible offerings—including dilution concerns tied to new note issuances—amplified the slide.
At the same time, bitcoin's broader correction and record network hashrate kept mining economics under pressure even as some operators diversified toward high-performance computing. The combination left WGMI exposed to both crypto and AI-infrastructure risk simultaneously.
Going forward, investors should monitor the trajectory of interest rates and inflation, given the sector's sensitivity to financing costs and long-dated lease income. Bitcoin's price and the next halving, mining difficulty and hash price, and AI-infrastructure financing and tenant counterparty risk remain key variables. Policy developments—including U.S. digital-asset legislation and SEC and CFTC oversight—could also shape the regulatory backdrop. Quarterly earnings and capital-raising activity across major holdings will be important signals of how the mining and digital-power complex navigates a higher-rate environment.
In my own workflow, Tickeron’s AI Screener has become a useful way to quickly compare holdings like those in WGMI against peers using technical indicators, fundamentals, and AI signals. It helps surface patterns across the sector without manual effort. From what I see, this kind of platform can add efficiency when tracking volatile areas like bitcoin miners and data-center operators.
