The Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ), an exchange-traded fund that tracks the Nasdaq-100 Index of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq, fell 2.10% on Wednesday. The fund traded near $727.92, down from a prior closing price of $743.57. The decline was driven by a hotter-than-expected inflation report that lifted interest-rate expectations, combined with continued pressure on semiconductor and artificial-intelligence-related holdings.
The dominant driver behind the decline was the September Consumer Price Index report. Headline CPI rose 3.7% year over year, above the 3.6% consensus forecast and an acceleration from 3.4% in August. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, advanced 2.6%, also above expectations. Gasoline prices jumped 9.1% month over month, accounting for more than half of the monthly increase.
The data prompted traders to reprice the likelihood of further Federal Reserve tightening. The odds of a quarter-point rate hike at the October 28 meeting roughly doubled from the low-20% range to roughly 45% to 60%, depending on the data source. Rising rate expectations are a direct headwind for growth-oriented technology equities, whose valuations depend heavily on future earnings.
In response to the inflation print, Treasury yields climbed sharply. The two-year yield rose roughly 14 to 18 basis points to near 4.93%, while the 10-year yield gained about 10 basis points to around 5.31%. Higher yields make the long-duration cash flows of large technology companies less attractive, and the QQQ fund's heavy technology weighting made it especially vulnerable to the move.
Beyond the macro data, the fund was pressured by a continuing repricing of the artificial-intelligence trade. Questions around the affordability and financing of AI infrastructure, along with concerns about rising competition in the memory-chip market, extended a multi-session slide in semiconductor stocks. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index was on track for its sixth or seventh consecutive down day, and AI-infrastructure names such as Dell Technologies, HP Inc., and Oracle came under particular selling pressure after analyst downgrades and financing concerns.
The fund's largest constituents drove much of the loss. Nvidia fell roughly 3%, while Meta Platforms declined more than 3% and Tesla slipped about 1.8%. In the semiconductor group, Advanced Micro Devices sank around 5.5% and Broadcom fell more than 1.5%. Oracle lost between roughly 6.5% and 8%, and Dell Technologies dropped sharply. Notably, Apple bucked the trend with a modest gain, providing a partial cushion to the fund's overall performance.
The QQQ fund's decline outpaced the broader market, reflecting its outsized exposure to rate-sensitive and AI-linked technology names. The Nasdaq Composite fell roughly 1.7% to 2.1%, while the S&P 500 lost roughly 0.7% to 1.4%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average held up comparatively well, easing only about 0.1% to 0.5% as defensive healthcare names provided support. Trading activity was elevated as investors repositioned following the inflation data, with declining issues outnumbering advancers across U.S. exchanges by a wide margin.
The near-term path for the fund hinges on the Federal Reserve's October policy decision and any signals on the trajectory of interest rates into early 2027. Semiconductor earnings, including updates from major chipmakers, will be closely watched given the sector's recent weakness and its substantial weight in the index. Investors will also monitor developments in AI-infrastructure financing, competitive dynamics in the memory-chip market, and the direction of Treasury yields. Ongoing energy-price trends, which are feeding into headline inflation, represent a further risk to the rate outlook and, by extension, to growth-oriented equities.
