Stellantis N.V. (STLA), the Amsterdam-headquartered automaker behind brands including Jeep, Ram, Fiat, Peugeot, and Chrysler, staged a powerful rally on Wednesday after reporting third-quarter 2026 earnings. Shares climbed roughly 13.8% to trade near $4.71, well above the prior session's close of $4.14, confirming a sharply upward move driven primarily by an earnings-and-guidance catalyst. Investors reacted positively to results that beat expectations and, most importantly, to management's decision to hold its full-year outlook steady at a time when many rivals are trimming forecasts.
The earnings-driven move was powered by a combination of better-than-feared results and steady guidance. Third-quarter net revenue rose 1% year over year to €37.6 billion, coming in above consensus estimates of roughly €36.4 billion. Adjusted operating income jumped 184% to €256 million from €90 million a year earlier, producing a 0.7% adjusted operating margin. The company's net loss narrowed sharply, by about 90%, to €453 million.
Just as important for sentiment, Stellantis reaffirmed its full-year 2026 guidance, projecting a mid-single-digit percentage increase in net revenue and a low-single-digit adjusted operating income margin. With other original equipment manufacturers and suppliers lowering their outlooks amid cost pressures, the decision to maintain guidance gave investors a renewed vote of confidence in the turnaround plan.
A key regional highlight supported the stock's advance. Stellantis's North American operations swung to an adjusted operating profit of €64 million in the quarter, helped by the rollout of the Jeep Cherokee hybrid and Ram 1500 Hemi. U.S. dealer inventory also declined to 368,000 vehicles, or 84 days of supply, at the end of September, down from 92 days in June, reflecting progress in clearing excess stock.
The picture was more mixed elsewhere. The enlarged Europe region posted an adjusted operating loss of €311 million as lower pricing and a shift toward less profitable electric vehicles weighed on results. Brands such as Peugeot and Opel continue to face intense competition from Volkswagen, Renault, and Chinese rivals including BYD.
Chief Executive Officer Antonio Filosa said the FaSTLAne 2030 turnaround plan is running ahead of schedule, with cost-cutting and quality-improvement initiatives gaining traction. The company expects its value-creation program to roughly double quarterly cost savings to as much as €600 million in the fourth quarter, up from about €300 million in the third. Stellantis also lowered its full-year net tariff cost estimate to about €1 billion, down from a prior forecast of up to €1.2 billion.
Industrial free cash flow remained a point of caution, staying negative at roughly €4 billion. While that was an improvement from the prior year's outflow, it missed analyst expectations. Still, the company reiterated its goal of returning to positive industrial free cash flow in 2027.
The rally unfolded on notably elevated trading volume, consistent with a genuine re-rating rather than a low-liquidity drift. The move reflected stock-specific news rather than broad sector or index momentum, as investors focused on Stellantis's results and guidance. Despite Wednesday's surge, STLA shares remain down roughly 60% year to date, underscoring how depressed expectations had become heading into the report.
Analyst commentary was measured. Some observers noted that while the quarter itself was soft, consensus expectations were even lower, making the reaffirmed guidance the central positive. Others cautioned that improving profitability in both North America and Europe remains the key challenge ahead.
Investors will now watch whether the fourth quarter delivers on management's promises of accelerating cost savings and a broadly stable pricing environment. Near-term headwinds include incremental costs from memory chips and recalls, as well as ongoing competitive pressure from Chinese electric-vehicle makers in Europe. The company's progress toward positive free cash flow in 2027 and the continued execution of its North American product offensive will be central to sustaining the rebound. Risks remain around demand, pricing, tariffs, and the pace of the EV transition in key markets.
