The Amplify Cybersecurity ETF (HACK) seeks to replicate, before fees and expenses, the total return performance of the Nasdaq ISE Cyber Security Select Index. Launched in November 2014, it is a passively managed, thematic equity fund focused on companies that derive substantial revenue from cybersecurity hardware, software, and services. The portfolio holds approximately 26 stocks and carries an expense ratio of 0.60%.
Holdings include cybersecurity-focused software and infrastructure providers along with a smaller industrials and defense component. Major positions feature Palo Alto Networks, CrowdStrike, Broadcom, Cisco Systems, Fortinet, Cloudflare, and Okta. Information technology accounts for roughly 90% of assets, while industrials — including General Dynamics and Northrop Grumman — make up most of the balance. This setup links the fund closely to enterprise software demand and government defense budgets, both of which include meaningful cybersecurity spending.
Cybersecurity stands out as one of the more durable structural growth themes in technology. Rising ransomware activity, state-sponsored intrusions, and the rapid spread of generative AI have widened the attack surface for enterprises and governments, sustaining demand for endpoint protection, identity management, and network security. Unlike more discretionary software categories, security budgets tend to hold up better through economic softness because breaches carry direct regulatory and reputational costs.
At the same time, the macroeconomic backdrop continues to influence sentiment. Elevated interest rates place pressure on the valuations of high-multiple growth equities, while inflation and shifting monetary policy affect institutional positioning in technology. Consolidation among leading vendors has also intensified competition, favoring scale players with integrated suites over narrower point solutions. These factors have kept the cybersecurity group volatile even as underlying demand stays relatively steady. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
HACK advanced approximately 4.6% over the trailing 30 days, with trading marked more by oscillation than a clean directional trend. The fund reached an intraday peak above $130 before pulling back to the $117 area and later recovering near $128, highlighting the sector’s sensitivity to shifting rate expectations and software sentiment. Over the trailing three months, the fund has gained more than 20%, reflecting a broader rotation back into cybersecurity and defensive technology names.
Performance has been driven mainly by its largest holdings. Platform vendors such as Palo Alto Networks and CrowdStrike have benefited from continued enterprise adoption of consolidated security architectures, while networking and semiconductor exposure through Cisco and Broadcom has tied a portion of returns to AI-related infrastructure spending. The fund’s equal-weighted approach, with capped individual positions, helps limit single-stock concentration and spreads exposure across both established names and faster-growing challengers.
Looking ahead, several structural elements are likely to shape HACK. The pace of AI adoption remains central, as generative tools create new attack vectors that drive incremental security spending while also prompting vendors to embed AI into their own offerings. Earnings results among major holdings will matter, with platform consolidation, subscription retention, and cloud-based delivery serving as key metrics for the sector’s growth path.
Macroeconomic conditions are equally relevant. The trajectory of interest rates and inflation will influence valuations for growth-oriented software equities, while federal and enterprise budget cycles affect procurement. Regulatory developments, including data-privacy rules and breach-disclosure mandates, could reinforce demand, whereas intensifying competition and the rising cost of AI-driven security offerings present ongoing risks. Capital flows into thematic technology ETFs and the relative appeal of cybersecurity versus broader software will also help determine whether recent strength holds.
In my own work, I occasionally turn to Tickeron’s AI Screener to scan for comparable thematic ETFs or to filter cybersecurity names by technical indicators, fundamentals, and risk metrics. The platform surfaces breakout candidates and helps narrow a broad universe into more focused watchlists, which can be useful when monitoring holdings like those in HACK.
