Interactive Brokers Group (IBKR) runs one of the world’s largest automated electronic brokerage platforms, serving individual investors, hedge funds, and financial advisors. Its third-quarter 2026 results provide a useful window into both retail and institutional trading activity as well as the firm’s exposure to interest rates via its sizable net interest income. After several strong quarters, the focus was on whether account growth and margin lending could offset a lower average federal funds rate. The ability to post record pre-tax profit while raising the dividend points to confidence in its automated, low-cost model even as trading volumes showed some moderation.
Interactive Brokers reported adjusted diluted EPS of $0.67 for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, matching the analyst consensus. Reported (GAAP) diluted EPS was $0.69, up from $0.59 in the year-ago quarter. Total net revenues were $1.91 billion, a 16% increase from $1.66 billion a year earlier and modestly above the $1.87 billion consensus. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Net interest income rose 19% year over year to $1.15 billion, supported by higher average customer margin loans and credit balances. Commission revenue increased 12% to $602 million, marking the third straight quarter above $600 million, aided by 18% growth in daily average revenue trades. Other fees and services climbed 33% to $88 million. The pre-tax margin was 78%, down slightly from 79% a year ago, while pre-tax income reached a record $1.50 billion.
Despite results that broadly met or exceeded expectations, IBKR shares traded about 2% lower in after-hours trading. The muted reaction appears tied to a few factors. While EPS matched consensus and revenue edged past estimates, trading activity showed some softness, with stock share volumes down 24% year over year and options volumes down 1%, offset only by a 13% rise in futures. Commission per cleared order also declined 4%. Investors also weighed a lower net interest margin and continued pressure from lower benchmark interest rates, even as balance growth kept net interest income rising. The dividend increase was viewed positively, but it was not enough to overcome the perception of mixed trading momentum heading into the fourth quarter.
Looking ahead, several themes will shape investor expectations for Interactive Brokers. The trajectory of interest rates remains the most important. Management noted that several central banks raised rates in September, and the timing of mid-quarter U.S. Federal Reserve hikes means most of their impact will be felt in the fourth quarter. Because net interest income is a major earnings driver, rate moves will stay a key swing factor.
Account and balance growth will also remain in focus. The company added accounts at a 35% annual pace, and customer margin loans surged 36% to $105.2 billion, indicating clients were willing to take on leverage in a more risk-on environment. Whether that borrowing appetite persists will influence future interest income.
Investors should also watch the company’s product and geographic expansion, including new exchange access in Romania and Texas, Brazil futures, cryptocurrency staking, and AI-driven trading tools. These initiatives support the growth story but carry execution risk. Finally, the raised dividend and advertising-driven increases in general and administrative expenses signal a firm investing in customer acquisition while returning more capital to shareholders—a balance worth monitoring in the quarters ahead.
