ProShares Ultra QQQ is a leveraged exchange-traded fund (ETF) that seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, corresponding to two times (2x) the daily performance of the Nasdaq-100 Index. Unlike a passive index fund designed for long-term buy-and-hold investing, QLD is a tactical tool intended for short-term traders, using swap agreements and futures contracts to generate its leveraged exposure.
The fund holds roughly 101 positions reflecting the Nasdaq-100, a modified market-capitalization-weighted basket of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq. Its portfolio is heavily concentrated in growth-oriented sectors: technology accounts for roughly 53% of holdings, communication services about 16%, and consumer discretionary about 13%. Top holdings include Nvidia (NVDA), Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), Broadcom (AVGO), Alphabet (GOOGL), Meta Platforms (META), and Tesla (TSLA).
QLD charges a net expense ratio of 0.95% and manages assets under management (AUM) of more than $13 billion. Its daily leverage reset means that returns over periods longer than a single day can diverge significantly from two times the index's return, particularly in volatile or range-bound markets. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the fund stacks up against peers in the leveraged ETF space.
Over the past 30 days, QLD fell from roughly $97 to about $86, a decline of approximately 11%. The move was not gradual: the fund rallied into early October before a sharp, multi-day drawdown concentrated in technology and semiconductor names, producing a volatile and trend-reversing pattern rather than a steady slide.
The broader three-month picture is strikingly different. From late July, when QLD traded near $85, the fund climbed to a record intraday high near $100 in early October before retreating. As a result, QLD is up only about 1% over the trailing quarter despite the dramatic round trip—an illustration of how leveraged daily-reset funds can give back accumulated gains quickly when momentum reverses.
The recent decline reflects a broad unwinding of the AI trade rather than a single company-specific event. The Nasdaq-100 fell more than 5% in one week—its steepest weekly drop in about 18 months—while the PHLX Semiconductor Index fell roughly 10% over the same stretch, its largest weekly decline in more than a year. Hedge funds reduced technology exposure at the fastest pace in at least a decade, according to prime-brokerage data.
Several factors converged. Investors grew more cautious about how AI infrastructure will be financed, as yields on debt issued by Nvidia-backed data-center operator CoreWeave (CRWV) climbed sharply, raising questions about the cost of funding future capital spending. Hotter-than-expected inflation data and oil prices that rose toward triple digits renewed expectations that the Federal Reserve could keep rates higher for longer. Disappointing quarterly results and forward commentary from mega-cap names, including Meta Platforms and Tesla, added to selling pressure across growth equities. Because QLD uses 2x daily leverage, each of these index declines translated into roughly double the loss for the fund.
For most of the trailing quarter, QLD benefited from persistent investor enthusiasm for AI and semiconductor leadership, which carried the Nasdaq-100 to record highs. This momentum masked growing concerns about valuation and the financing requirements of the AI buildout.
The reversal in October reflected a rotation away from the most crowded growth positions. Semiconductor and AI-infrastructure names led the declines, while more defensive areas of the market held up better. Institutional positioning—which had become heavily tilted toward technology—was trimmed sharply as investors reassessed the pace at which enormous capital expenditures might translate into earnings. The result was a quarter defined less by net price change than by elevated volatility and a rapid rotation within equities.
Going forward, the key variables likely to influence QLD are closely tied to the health of the AI trade and the interest-rate environment. Investors should monitor the financing conditions for AI infrastructure, including credit spreads and yields on debt issued by data-center and cloud operators, since tighter funding conditions could dampen capital-spending growth and weigh on semiconductor demand.
The trajectory of inflation and oil prices will also matter, as persistent price pressures could keep Federal Reserve policy restrictive and pressure the valuations of long-duration growth stocks. Upcoming earnings from major Nasdaq-100 constituents such as Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet will provide further insight into whether AI-related spending is translating into revenue and profitability. Finally, the fund's 2x daily leverage means that any renewed volatility in the underlying index—whether driven by earnings surprises, geopolitical developments, or shifts in monetary-policy expectations—can produce outsized moves in either direction.
Tickeron’s AI Screener has become a useful part of my routine for scanning the market. It helps filter thousands of securities by technical indicators, fundamentals, volatility, price patterns, and AI signals, which can surface momentum shifts or breakout candidates more efficiently than manual methods. For anyone looking to apply a more systematic lens to setups like the recent moves in leveraged funds, it offers a practical way to narrow options based on personal criteria.
