The Roundhill Generative AI & Technology ETF is an actively managed, thematic fund focused on companies involved in generative artificial intelligence and adjacent technologies. Rather than tracking a benchmark index, its managers select a concentrated portfolio of roughly 46 holdings spanning semiconductor design, memory, chip equipment, cloud computing, and AI software. The fund carries a net expense ratio of 0.75% and manages more than $1.6 billion in assets under management (AUM), a measure of the total market value of assets the fund holds.
The portfolio is dominated by technology names, which account for roughly three-quarters of assets, with Communication Services, Consumer Cyclical, and Industrials comprising most of the remainder. The largest positions include NVDA, Alphabet (GOOGL), AVGO, AMD, MU, SK hynix, Nebius (NBIS), and ASML. This concentration in AI hardware and memory explains why CHAT is highly sensitive to shifts in semiconductor sentiment and financing conditions. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
During the last 30 days, CHAT fell from a closing price of about $91.98 to roughly $75.33, a decline of approximately 18%. The move was not linear: the fund traded near $96 in early October before deteriorating sharply through the back half of the month as the semiconductor complex sold off.
Over the trailing quarter, the picture is more nuanced. From a closing level near $80.18 roughly three months earlier, CHAT declined about 6%. The path was volatile, marked by a drawdown in July, a strong rebound into early October, and a renewed slide late in the period. In absolute terms, the recent 30-day decline accounts for the bulk of the quarterly loss.
The primary trigger was a repricing of interest-rate expectations after September inflation data came in hotter than forecast, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI), a measure of changes in consumer prices, rising 3.7% year over year and the Producer Price Index (PPI) climbing 6.3%. Markets responded by pricing a higher probability of further Federal Reserve rate increases, while the 10-year Treasury yield pushed above 5%. Higher borrowing costs hit the capital-intensive AI buildout directly.
Financing stress was most visible in debt-laden data-center operators. Yields on CoreWeave's 9.625% bonds due 2032 surged toward 15%, and Oracle's debt also repriced sharply, raising broader questions about how AI infrastructure expansion is funded. The selloff then broadened after Intel (INTC) issued disappointing fourth-quarter guidance and warned it would not generate positive cash flow for the year, and after Lam Research flagged supply constraints across the chip sector.
Memory names were especially hard hit. South Korean manufacturers Samsung Electronics and SK hynix posted steep single-day declines, pressured by concerns over Chinese competition and the prospect of eventual memory oversupply. Because these names and other semiconductor holdings are core CHAT positions, the fund's decline closely tracked the sector rout.
The trailing three-month trend reflects a broader shift in how investors are evaluating the AI trade. After strong gains into mid-2026, market participants began weighing elevated valuations against the cost and uncertain payoff timeline of generative AI capital expenditures. Rising Treasury yields and persistent inflation reduced the present value of future earnings, hitting growth-oriented holdings hardest.
The quarter featured two distinct drawdowns separated by a rebound, indicating choppy, sentiment-driven trading rather than a single fundamental catalyst. Institutional positioning rotated away from high-multiple semiconductor and AI infrastructure names, while concerns over memory pricing and hyperscaler spending commitments kept pressure on CHAT's largest holdings throughout the period.
The key variables for CHAT going forward are interest rates and the durability of AI capital expenditure. Further upside surprises in inflation or renewed upward pressure on Treasury yields could prolong pressure on growth and semiconductor valuations, while any moderation in financing costs would likely ease the strain on debt-heavy infrastructure names. Investors should also monitor memory pricing dynamics, given the fund's exposure to Samsung, SK hynix, and MU, and watch earnings guidance from hyperscalers such as MSFT and Meta Platforms (META) for signals on spending commitments. The trajectory of CoreWeave's credit quality and broader data-center financing conditions remain important sentiment indicators for the entire AI complex. These themes—rather than any single data point—are likely to shape CHAT's near-term direction. From what I see, this is important because it highlights how sensitive the fund remains to macroeconomic shifts.
Tickeron's AI Screener is an AI-powered stock and ETF discovery platform that helps investors scan thousands of securities using technical indicators, fundamentals, volatility metrics, price patterns, industry filters, AI-generated signals, and performance characteristics. By automating the screening process, it allows users to identify trending securities, breakout candidates, and opportunities that match specific investment criteria far more efficiently than manual research. Investors evaluating thematic funds or the underlying stocks that drive them can use the AI Screener to surface relevant ideas across sectors and industries. In my analysis of CHAT, this tool helped me quickly compare its holdings against broader sector trends.
