The Defiance Daily Target 2X Long SMCI ETF is an actively managed, semi-transparent exchange-traded fund launched in August 2024. It seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, of two times (200%) the daily percentage change in the share price of Super Micro Computer (SMCI), a maker of high-performance AI servers and rack-scale data center infrastructure.
SMCX does not hold SMCI common stock directly. Instead, it pursues its leverage objective primarily through total return swap agreements with multiple financial counterparties, supplemented by listed options, with U.S. Treasury bills and government money-market obligations held as collateral. Its exposure is therefore effectively 100% concentrated in a single security — SMCI — within the technology hardware, storage, and peripherals industry. The fund carries a net expense ratio of about 1.43% and manages roughly $153 million in net assets.
This single-security, daily-reset structure is central to understanding SMCX's recent behavior. Over periods longer than one day, returns can diverge materially from a simple 2x multiple of SMCI's cumulative move because leverage is reset each session and volatility erodes compounding. That dynamic magnifies both rallies and drawdowns and makes the fund substantially more volatile than its underlying holding. To get a quick sense of how SMCX fits among other leveraged products, I ran a scan using Tickeron’s AI Screener.
Over the trailing 30 days, SMCX climbed approximately 42%, rising from an adjusted closing level near $8.53 to roughly $12.12. The advance was not a smooth, gradual uptrend; it was dominated by a single earnings-driven surge in mid-August, followed by consolidation near the higher level.
The broader three-month picture tells a very different story. SMCX is still down roughly 37% over the trailing quarter, having traded near $19.38 about three months ago. The quarter has been defined by extreme volatility: a steep, leverage-amplified selloff in June, a slide to a 52-week low in mid-July, and only a partial recovery since. In short, the recent 42% gain has retraced a meaningful portion — but not all — of a much larger drawdown. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
The dominant catalyst was Super Micro's fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 earnings report, released after the market close on August 11. The company reported adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $1.70, far above consensus estimates near $0.92, on revenue of about $11.12 billion. More importantly, non-GAAP gross margin rebounded to 17.6% — more than double the roughly 8% management had previously guided — and the company disclosed more than $60 billion in new orders during the quarter, lifting its backlog to a record high.
Guidance provided the decisive spark. Super Micro forecast first-quarter revenue of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion and fiscal 2027 revenue of $65 billion to $72 billion, both well above Wall Street's expectations. The stock jumped roughly 19% the following session, making it the best performer in the S&P 500 that day, and extended its gains over subsequent sessions. Because SMCX targets 2x the daily move, it surged more than 36% in that single session.
The rally also lifted the broader AI-hardware complex. Shares of NVDA, AMD, and INTC all advanced in the following sessions, as Super Micro's order book was read as an independent confirmation of durable AI-infrastructure spending.
The trailing three-month period was dominated by a sharp June drawdown. In early June, Super Micro announced a roughly $7 billion equity and equity-linked capital raise to fund component purchases for its growing AI-server backlog, triggering significant dilution concerns among investors. The announcement, combined with a Department of Justice indictment of a company co-founder over alleged export-control violations and a broader pullback in AI hardware stocks amid elevated Middle East tensions, sent SMCI sharply lower. With 2x leverage, SMCX fell about 44% in a single session in mid-June and continued to slide into a 52-week low in July.
Super Micro's July 21 disclosure of preliminary fourth-quarter results — which signaled a stronger-than-expected gross-margin recovery — sparked an initial rebound. The August earnings release then accelerated that recovery. Even so, the daily-reset mechanics of a leveraged single-stock ETF meant the product's path-dependent returns compounded against it during the volatile period, leaving SMCX well below its late-May and early-June levels despite the recent surge.
Several factors will likely shape SMCX over the coming months. First is whether Super Micro can convert its record backlog into delivered revenue: its next quarterly report will test management's ability to hit the guided $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion revenue range while managing an expected normalization in gross margin. Analysts remain divided on whether the margin improvement is durable, a debate that could drive volatility in the underlying stock.
Broader macro conditions also matter. Persistently elevated inflation and the trajectory of interest rates will influence how richly investors value high-growth AI-hardware names, while the rollout of next-generation AI platforms from NVDA and AMD could determine the pace of server refresh cycles. Competitive pressure from peers such as DELL and the ongoing export-control investigation remain key risks.
Finally, investors should account for SMCX's structural characteristics. As a daily-reset, 2x leveraged single-stock ETF, it is designed for short-term tactical use and is not intended as a long-term buy-and-hold vehicle; path dependency, volatility drag, and daily compounding can produce returns that diverge sharply from 2x the underlying's performance over time.
