SOXL is a leveraged exchange-traded fund that seeks daily investment results, before fees and expenses, equal to 300% of the daily performance of the ICE Semiconductor Index. That index tracks the roughly 30 largest U.S.-listed semiconductor companies on a modified float-adjusted market-cap basis.
The fund carries a net expense ratio of 0.75% and is non-diversified. It uses swap agreements, Treasury positions, and some direct equity holdings to deliver its target leverage. Top equity positions include NVIDIA (NVDA), Micron (MU), AMD, Broadcom (AVGO), Intel (INTC), Marvell (MRVL), Applied Materials (AMAT), Qualcomm (QCOM), Texas Instruments (TXN), and Lam Research (LRCX). I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the holdings compare to others in the industry.
Because SOXL resets leverage each day, returns over periods longer than one day can differ substantially from three times the index return. In trending markets gains and losses compound, while volatility drag can erode results in choppy conditions. This helps explain why a mid-teens decline in the underlying index produced a much larger loss for the fund.
Over the last 30 days SOXL fell from about $147.86 to $77.05, a decline of roughly 48%. The drop featured sharp daily swings, including one session that saw a loss of more than 24% as the broader semiconductor group sold off.
Over the last quarter the picture is also negative, though less extreme. From roughly three months earlier when the fund traded near $114.72, SOXL declined approximately 33%. The period showed pronounced volatility rather than a steady trend, with an early run-up followed by an aggressive late-October reversal. The gap between the two time frames highlights how quickly losses can build in a daily-rebalanced leveraged product. From what I see, this pattern is worth monitoring closely in any leveraged vehicle.
The main driver was a sector-wide semiconductor selloff after disappointing earnings. Intel (INTC) plunged roughly 28% after issuing fourth-quarter guidance below expectations and flagging ongoing PC-market weakness, manufacturing constraints, and elevated cash burn. Weakness spread across the group: AMD and Qualcomm (QCOM) fell by double digits in the final session, while NVIDIA (NVDA), Micron (MU), and Broadcom (AVGO) also declined.
Beyond company-specific news, sentiment deteriorated on wider concerns. Higher-than-expected capital expenditures and cautious outlooks from major cloud platforms renewed questions about returns on AI infrastructure spending. Competitive developments from China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies added pressure on memory names. A hotter-than-expected inflation print and shifting rate expectations further weighed on high-valuation growth and semiconductor stocks.
The three-month trend reflects a broader rotation out of high-multiple semiconductor equities. After an early-summer surge the sector grew more volatile as investors debated the durability of the AI investment cycle, memory pricing, and chip valuations. Institutional ETF flows shifted as sentiment cooled, and several bellwether holdings underperformed.
Rising financing costs and uncertainty around payback periods for large-scale AI data-center spending acted as ongoing headwinds. Memory-related names faced extra pressure from competitive developments, while PC-exposed companies dealt with soft demand. These longer-running themes, rather than any single event, shaped the fund’s quarterly decline and left SOXL particularly exposed given its 3x leverage.
In my own work I often use Tickeron’s AI Screener to scan for semiconductor trends and momentum signals across the underlying holdings. The platform lets me quickly review technical indicators, fundamentals, and performance metrics so I can better understand how names like those in SOXL are behaving relative to peers. It has become a regular part of checking sector rotation and volatility patterns.
Looking ahead, the key variables for SOXL will likely be the path of semiconductor earnings, the sustainability of AI capital spending, and interest-rate trends. Guidance from major chipmakers and cloud platforms will help clarify whether the recent selloff marks a lasting reset or a temporary pullback. Memory pricing, Chinese competition, and PC demand remain important industry factors.
On the macro side, inflation data and central-bank policy will influence borrowing costs and valuations for growth-oriented semiconductor equities. Given SOXL’s 3x daily leverage, investors should also watch volatility levels and the potential for compounding effects. The fund’s near-term direction will stay highly sensitive to daily moves in the index, so risk management and position sizing deserve careful attention. I’m watching this closely as the next round of earnings approaches.
