MNTN, Inc. (MNTN) is an Austin, Texas-based technology platform that brings performance marketing to Connected TV advertising. On Thursday, the company's shares suffered one of their sharpest single-session declines on record, tumbling approximately 51.7% to around $5.01 from a prior close of $10.37. The selloff followed a disappointing third-quarter 2026 earnings report in which revenue and adjusted EBITDA fell short of guidance, management slashed its full-year outlook, and the company disclosed significant upheaval in its go-to-market organization, including a change in chief executive officer.
The driving force behind the collapse was a weak third-quarter print. Revenue grew 15% year over year to $80.3 million, but that was below the company's own guidance range of $86 million to $89 million and short of the roughly $87.8 million Wall Street had expected. Adjusted EBITDA of $19.9 million also missed the company's $22 million to $25 million target. More damaging was the forward view: MNTN guided fourth-quarter revenue to $75 million to $78 million, far below the roughly $108.5 million analysts had modeled, and cut full-year 2026 revenue guidance to $311 million to $314 million from a prior range of $347 million to $357 million.
Management attributed the shortfall to execution problems rather than weakening demand for its platform. A change in sales-compensation structure, implemented at the start of the third quarter, led to the departure of roughly 40% of the company's experienced, quota-carrying sellers. The disruption disproportionately hit new-customer acquisition, even as existing customers continued to expand spending at a healthy rate. The company said it has since corrected the compensation plans and begun rebuilding the sales team, but acknowledged that new hires will take time to reach full productivity, with disruption expected to persist through the fourth quarter.
The earnings shock was amplified by sweeping leadership changes. Board member Tony Weisman was appointed chief executive officer, succeeding Mark Douglas, just two days before results were released, while the chief operating officer and chief revenue officer departed. The abrupt transition rattled investors already processing the operational miss. In response, several firms downgraded the stock, including Raymond James and Citizens, which moved to Market Perform, while Evercore ISI cut its rating and lowered its price target to $7 from $22. Other firms reduced targets as well, with Canaccord trimming its target to $10 from $18 and Susquehanna to $12 from $20.
The decline occurred on heavy volume, reflecting broad-based repositioning as investors reassessed the company's near-term growth trajectory. The move pushed MNTN well below its prior 52-week low, signaling a decisive technical breakdown. The broader market provided no cushion: the Nasdaq traded lower on the session, weighing on technology and software names, while sentiment across the software sector remained fragile. With the S&P 500 and Dow Jones only modestly changed, the stock's collapse was overwhelmingly company-specific rather than a function of index-level moves.
Investor attention now turns to the company's fourth-quarter and fiscal-year results, when management has said it will provide a more detailed operating plan and 2027 outlook. Key questions include how quickly the rebuilt sales organization can ramp, whether existing-customer expansion remains resilient, and whether new leadership can restore confidence in execution. Risks include the possibility that the sales-force disruption lingers longer than expected, further pressuring new-customer growth and near-term revenue. On the positive side, the company retains a debt-free balance sheet with roughly $252 million in cash and stable gross margins near 79%.
