MV Oil Trust is a statutory trust... Show more
MV Oil Trust was a Delaware statutory trust formed in 2006 that held an 80% term net profits interest in the oil and natural gas properties of MV Partners, LLC. The underlying properties were located in the Mid-Continent region across Kansas and Colorado and included the El Dorado, Augusta, and Valley Center fields, operated by Vess Oil Corporation and comprising roughly 840 producing wells. The Bank of New York Mellon Trust Company, N.A., served as trustee.
Unlike a conventional exploration and production company, the trust was a pass-through vehicle that distributed most of its net proceeds to unitholders each quarter. This structure made MVO a high-yield, income-oriented instrument whose payouts were directly tied to crude oil prices and production volumes rather than to traditional corporate earnings growth.
Over its final stretch of trading, MVO units declined to essentially zero. The trust had long disclosed that the market price of its units would fall to zero at termination, and that decline played out as the June 30, 2026 termination date approached. Trading ended entirely before the market open on July 27, 2026, following the voluntary delisting of the units from the NYSE.
During the prior quarter, the units declined steadily from levels around $2.00 or more toward the final distribution value and ultimately zero. This multi-month slide mirrored the shrinking remaining payout as the termination date neared, rather than any single earnings or commodity-driven event. The 52-week range had spanned from roughly $0.97 to more than $6.00 per unit, underscoring the volatility associated with a finite-life royalty trust approaching its end.
The final price move was driven entirely by the trust's contractual termination. Because the minimum production threshold of 14.4 MMBoe (equivalent to 11.5 MMBoe for the trust's 80% net profits interest) had been produced and sold, the net profits interest terminated on June 30, 2026. On July 2, 2026, the trust announced its final distribution of $6,829,206, or $0.593844 per unit, payable on July 24, 2026.
Simultaneously, the trustee notified the NYSE of its intention to voluntarily withdraw the units' listing. Trading concluded before the market open on July 27, 2026, and the units were not relisted on any other national securities exchange. Shortly thereafter, the trust filed a Form 15 to terminate its SEC registration, and the units were cancelled. In short, MVO did not fall on negative news or weak fundamentals; it reached the predetermined end of its legal life.
The quarterly decline reflected the same structural forces, unfolding gradually. As the June 30, 2026 termination date approached, the trust's remaining distributions shrank. The first-quarter 2026 distribution (announced April 2, 2026) was $0.170 per unit, down from $0.205 per unit for the third quarter of 2025 and $0.140 per unit for the fourth quarter of 2025. With a finite number of payments remaining, the units' market value converged toward the discounted sum of those final distributions and then toward zero once the trust dissolved.
Oil prices and production costs continued to influence the size of each payout, but the dominant driver was the countdown to termination. Investors who held the units through the final quarter were essentially receiving the remaining cash flows of a winding-down vehicle, and the price action reflected that reality.

For MVO specifically, there are no future catalysts to monitor. The net profits interest terminated on June 30, 2026, the final distribution was paid on July 24, 2026, and the units were delisted and cancelled. The trust has wound up its affairs and will pay no further distributions, and its units are no longer a tradeable security on any national exchange.
Investors who followed MVO as an income vehicle may wish to evaluate other energy royalty trusts or income-producing securities, but any such decision should be based on each instrument's own terms, reserve life, and distribution structure. As with all securities, past performance does not guarantee future results.
