The Invesco PHLX Semiconductor ETF (SOXQ) is a passively managed exchange-traded fund designed to track the PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index, which measures the performance of the 30 largest U.S.-listed companies engaged in the semiconductor business. The fund uses a modified market-capitalization weighting and carries a competitive expense ratio of 0.19%, with roughly $3 billion in assets under management.
The portfolio is effectively 100% allocated to the Information Technology sector and holds approximately 30 securities. Its largest positions include NVIDIA at roughly 10% of assets, Micron Technology near 9%, and Broadcom around 8%. Other significant holdings include Advanced Micro Devices, Applied Materials, KLA, Lam Research, ASML, Intel, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. This concentrated, high-beta structure means the fund amplifies both rallies and selloffs across the semiconductor industry. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the holdings compare to peers in the sector.
Over the last 30 days, SOXQ fell approximately 14%, declining from a closing level near $98.64 to about $84.82. The move was not a straight-line decline; the fund first climbed toward a local peak above $104 in early October before reversing sharply into a multi-week selloff.
The quarterly picture is similar. From a close near $97.16 about three months earlier, the ETF has dropped roughly 13%. In both time frames, the pattern has been volatile and trend-reversing rather than gradual: an initial advance gave way to an abrupt, broad-based de-rating of semiconductor valuations.
The recent decline reflects a convergence of industry-specific and macroeconomic pressures. Chinese memory maker CXMT reported progress on a denser memory design, raising investor concern that increased Chinese supply could eventually unwind the shortage that has supported memory pricing. This hit memory producers hardest, with Micron Technology among the portfolio's weakest contributors.
At the same time, commentary from Broadcom's chief executive comparing some AI-related capital flows to "casino gambling" and warning that capital could become the industry's biggest constraint amplified worries about the sustainability of AI infrastructure spending. These concerns were reinforced by rising financing costs, with the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield climbing toward 5% and producer-price data keeping additional monetary tightening on the table.
The selling was broad-based. Semiconductor-equipment makers such as Lam Research and Applied Materials also declined sharply, and the PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index fell for eight consecutive sessions in mid-October, its longest losing streak in nearly two decades.
The three-month decline reflects a broader reassessment of the AI investment theme rather than a single earnings disappointment. After a strong run, investors began demanding clearer evidence that record levels of AI capital expenditure would translate into revenue and free cash flow. Questions around debt-financed data-center buildouts, elevated interest rates, and the durability of memory pricing weighed on the entire complex.
Within the portfolio, the cyclical segments of the chip industry, memory and capital equipment, bore the brunt of the selling, while more diversified, design-led businesses held up comparatively better. Institutional flows into semiconductor ETFs remained notable, suggesting dip-buying interest, but it was not enough to offset the valuation reset across the sector.
The most important variables for SOXQ going forward are the trajectory of AI capital spending, the cost and availability of financing, and the balance of supply and demand in the memory market. Additional progress from Chinese memory producers, shifts in memory pricing, and commentary from major holdings on order visibility and capital budgets will remain key catalysts.
Investors should also monitor interest-rate expectations and inflation data, which influence both the discount rate applied to high-growth semiconductor equities and the cost of funding AI infrastructure. Earnings reports from the fund's largest holdings, along with equipment-order trends and any signs of tightening credit conditions, are likely to shape the ETF's near-term direction. The sector's elevated valuations and high beta suggest continued volatility is possible even if long-term structural demand for semiconductors remains intact.
I recently turned to Tickeron’s AI Screener to scan for comparable semiconductor ETFs and individual names under similar technical and fundamental conditions. The platform lets me apply filters for sector exposure, volatility, and AI signals in one place, which helps refine ideas beyond basic price charts. It has become a useful step in my routine when reviewing holdings like those in SOXQ.
