The Spear Alpha ETF is an actively managed, non-diversified exchange-traded fund that invests primarily in equity securities of companies its adviser believes are positioned to benefit from breakthrough innovation in industrial and information technology. Launched in August 2021, the fund pursues long-term capital growth by concentrating capital in a relatively small basket of roughly 30 holdings rather than tracking a broad benchmark.
Portfolio exposure is overwhelmingly technology-oriented, with the sector representing roughly 75% to 90% of net assets, complemented by smaller allocations to industrials and financial services. Top positions include Astera Labs, Cloudflare, Lam Research, Coherent, and Arm Holdings, alongside optical and connectivity names such as Lumentum, Applied Optoelectronics, Ciena, and Credo Technology, plus semiconductor-equipment leader KLA and a private holding in Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX). The fund carries a net expense ratio of 0.75%.
This concentrated, high-beta structure explains the fund's volatility: because a handful of AI-infrastructure and semiconductor supply-chain positions dominate the portfolio, sector-wide shifts in sentiment translate directly into outsized share-price moves. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Over the last 30 days, SPRX fell approximately 24%, declining from a close near $48.20 to $36.75. The move was not gradual: the fund traded near $52 in early October before a sharp, multi-week reversal erased those gains.
The trailing quarter tells a similar story of volatility. Measured from a base near $42 in late July, SPRX is down roughly 13% as of the most recent close—but that figure masks a mid-quarter rally to a peak above $52, followed by a pronounced selloff. In short, the quarter has been trend-reversing rather than range-bound, with concentrated tech exposure amplifying both the advance and the subsequent decline.
The recent decline is best understood through the fund's portfolio rather than any single event. SPRX's largest weightings sit squarely in the AI-infrastructure and semiconductor ecosystem—chip-connectivity leader Astera Labs, cloud-security and networking provider Cloudflare, wafer-fabrication equipment makers Lam Research and KLA, and optical-component suppliers Coherent, Lumentum, Applied Optoelectronics, and Ciena. These are high-valuation, high-beta businesses whose shares are sensitive to shifts in AI capital-expenditure expectations and to the trajectory of interest rates.
As technology and semiconductor equities broadly came under pressure, the fund's concentrated positioning meant it absorbed a disproportionate share of the weakness. The optical networking and semiconductor-equipment segments, in particular, tend to move together on AI-infrastructure sentiment, so a pullback in that theme rippled across a large portion of the portfolio. Because SPRX is non-diversified and holds only about 30 names, it could not offset these declines through unrelated sectors.
Over the full three-month period, the dominant force has been a rotation within—and growing scrutiny of—the AI and semiconductor trade. Early in the quarter, enthusiasm around AI infrastructure buildouts lifted SPRX's holdings to a peak above $52. That advance then unwound as investors reassessed the durability of elevated technology valuations and the pace of future capital spending.
Fundamentals remain concentrated in a narrow set of growth names, which makes the fund highly sensitive to institutional positioning and risk appetite. The same characteristics that powered the fund's advance—tight focus on AI hardware, optical connectivity, and semiconductor capital equipment—also magnified the subsequent decline, underscoring how actively managed, thematic vehicles can experience sharp swings when sector sentiment turns.
Looking ahead, the factors most likely to influence SPRX are structural rather than isolated. Interest-rate expectations will remain central, given the portfolio's tilt toward long-duration growth equities. The pace and visibility of AI capital expenditure—particularly in data-center connectivity, optical networking, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment—will continue to drive the fund's largest holdings. Inflation data and the broader macroeconomic growth outlook will also shape investor appetite for high-valuation technology names.
At the holding level, earnings and guidance from semiconductor-equipment and optical-component companies will be key, as will any shifts in cloud and AI-infrastructure spending cycles. Capital flows into thematic technology ETFs, regulatory developments affecting semiconductor trade, and the competitive landscape in AI hardware all carry the potential to act as catalysts or risks. Because SPRX is actively managed, its adviser may also adjust positioning in response to these conditions, making ongoing portfolio-level monitoring essential. From what I see, this is important because the fund's structure leaves little room for error when themes shift.
In my view, tools like Tickeron’s AI Screener help investors scan thousands of securities using technical indicators, fundamentals, volatility metrics, price patterns, industry filters, and AI-generated signals. By combining customizable criteria with performance characteristics, the tool is designed to surface ideas more efficiently than manual screening. Investors seeking to monitor the same AI-infrastructure and semiconductor themes that drive SPRX can use the screener to filter for relevant industries and momentum profiles. I’m watching this closely as part of my regular research process.
