Super Micro Computer, Inc. (SMCI), based in San Jose, California, supplies high-performance servers, storage, networking, and AI/IT infrastructure. Founded in 1993, the company emphasizes its modular architecture and direct liquid cooling to deliver customized systems rapidly. It has grown from a server assembler into a broader IT solutions provider centered on its Data Center Building Block Solutions platform, which covers GPU and CPU servers, storage, cooling, networking, software, and services for AI data centers. Its ties to chip leader NVIDIA (NVDA) remain central to the AI server business, and I follow the stock closely as an indicator of infrastructure spending trends.
Over the trailing 30 days, SMCI advanced about 44%, climbing from a close of $25.70 on July 29 to $37.08 on August 28. The move picked up pace after the August 11 earnings release, with shares rising roughly 17% the next session on strong volume before settling in the mid-to-high $30s. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
The full quarter showed more turbulence. The stock reached an intraday peak above $51 in early June, closing at $50.17 on June 2, then dropped sharply to a low near $23.83 by July 20 — a decline of more than 50% from the June high. The rebound into the high $30s left the shares roughly flat versus late-May levels, though the route was notably choppy.
The main catalyst came from Supermicro’s fiscal fourth-quarter results released on August 11, 2026. Revenue jumped 93% year over year to $11.12 billion, while non-GAAP earnings per share reached $1.70, well above consensus. Non-GAAP gross margin improved to 17.6% from 10.1% in the previous quarter, which management linked to a favorable customer and product mix along with lower tariff costs and inventory reserves.
Guidance added further support. The company forecast fiscal 2027 revenue of $65 billion to $72 billion, above the roughly $53 billion consensus, and projected first-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue of $14.5 billion–$15.5 billion. Combined with more than $60 billion in new orders and a record backlog, the update strengthened views that AI demand stays solid. A late-August statement that an independent review found no evidence current leadership knew of alleged export-control violations eased some governance questions, even as the stock eased modestly on the news. Analyst reactions varied, with several firms lifting price targets while keeping measured ratings.
Larger swings during the quarter stemmed mainly from legal and governance issues. In March 2026, U.S. prosecutors indicted Supermicro co-founder Yih-Shyan "Wally" Liaw and others on charges of allegedly diverting billions of dollars of NVIDIA-based servers to China in violation of export controls; the company itself was not charged. Further charges appeared in June, and in late June Taiwanese prosecutors raided the local office and detained two employees.
Shares also fell roughly 28% on June 10 after Supermicro announced a sizable equity offering to support new orders, raising dilution worries, along with reports of a major hyperscale customer canceling an order. The stock began to stabilize in July when the company’s July 21 preliminary results pointed to a stronger-than-expected margin recovery, paving the way for the August earnings reaction.
Going forward, attention will center on whether Supermicro can maintain its progress. First-quarter fiscal 2027 results, due in early November 2026, will draw scrutiny, especially whether revenue falls within the $14.5 billion–$15.5 billion guidance. Gross margin remains important, as management guided the first-quarter range toward 10.4%–10.8%, a clear step down from the fourth quarter’s 17.6%. Other items to watch include the speed of backlog conversion, customer readiness delays related to power, cooling, and networking, the outcome of export-control investigations, and competition from rivals such as Dell (DELL) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE). Customer concentration and working-capital needs tied to rapid growth also warrant attention.
