Walmart announced a new delivery service to fufill “last mile” delivery process. Called Spark Delivery, the service will crowdsource independent drivers for delivering groceries to customer doorsteps. The concept is similar to Amazon Flex and therefore looks like this is Walmart’s latest shot at beating Amazon’s rapidly growing network. Spark allows drivers to pick time slots that work best with their schedules and also offers navigation assistance among other services. Drivers sign-up with Delivery Drivers Inc, a firm that manages such workers.
In March, Walmart said that it will offer delivery of groceries to households across 100 U.S. cities by the end of 2018. It has since partnered with several small delivery companies like Doordash and Postmates to meet its target.
