Applied Optoelectronics, Inc. (AAOI) designs and manufactures advanced optical networking and hybrid fiber-coax products that support AI data centers, CATV broadband, telecom, and fiber-to-the-home networks. Headquartered in Sugar Land, Texas, with operations in Atlanta, Taipei, and Ningbo, the company maintains vertical integration that includes in-house laser manufacturing.
The data center segment drives most growth, supplying 400G, 800G, and upcoming 1.6T optical transceivers to hyperscale cloud and AI customers. A smaller but complementary CATV business supplies amplifiers and DOCSIS 4.0 equipment. I checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how AAOI compares to peers in the optical components space.
Over the last 30 days, AAOI declined about 34%, moving from a closing price near $150 in mid-August to roughly $99. The shares briefly traded above $155 after the second-quarter earnings release before reversing lower, including one session that dropped nearly 9%.
The quarterly picture shows even greater volatility. The stock started the period near $170 in mid-June, fell to an interim low around $76 in late July, recovered to roughly $150 after earnings, and has since settled near $99 — a decline of roughly 42% over the quarter. This looks like a high-momentum AI-related name undergoing a valuation reset after an extended advance.
Several elements lined up with the pullback. Second-quarter revenue rose 86% year over year and the company returned to non-GAAP profitability, yet third-quarter guidance came in below consensus expectations. Revenue guidance of $255 million to $290 million and adjusted EPS guidance of $0.11 to $0.26 both fell short of analyst forecasts, which the market read as a more cautious outlook.
Valuation also contributed. After a triple-digit advance in the prior six months, AAOI traded at a premium multiple on projected 2026 revenue, leaving room for profit-taking. Rising operating expenses, a non-GAAP gross margin near 29.8% that sits well below the long-term 40% target, and an at-the-market equity raise of about $539 million added to dilution concerns. I also reviewed broader sector moves with Tickeron’s AI Daily Buy/Sell Signals to gauge how other high-multiple names were behaving.
Sector rotation, volatility in AI stocks, and speculative reports about possible U.S. restrictions on Chinese optical modules added uncertainty. Management has noted that any restrictions are too early to assess but highlighted the advantage of its U.S. manufacturing footprint.
The quarterly decline appears more as a valuation reset than a change in fundamentals. Applied Optoelectronics posted its fifth consecutive quarter of record revenue, with data center revenue up 140% year over year and CATV revenue hitting a new high. The company reaffirmed its full-year 2026 revenue target of about $1.1 billion and noted that customer demand continues to exceed production capacity by 20% to 40%, with that imbalance expected to persist through mid-2027.
Execution risks remain in focus. Capital spending reached about $565 million in the second quarter alone, and aggressive capacity expansion is needed to meet demand. High customer concentration, with the top three customers accounting for roughly 92% of revenue, leaves results sensitive to order timing. Combined with the still-elevated multiple, these factors have contributed to sharp price swings.
Investors will likely watch the 800G ramp, which management expects to grow nearly fivefold sequentially in the third quarter, along with qualification and initial shipments of 1.6T transceivers. Progress on the new 210,000-square-foot Sugar Land facility and the path to more than 650,000 units of monthly 800G and 1.6T capacity by year-end are important markers.
Additional factors include gross margin improvement toward the long-term target, component supply constraints such as DSPs and TIAs, order timing from the concentrated customer base, and broader AI capital-expenditure trends. Trade policy affecting optical modules remains an area of uncertainty. None of this constitutes a prediction or investment recommendation.
I’ve found Tickeron’s AI Trend Prediction Engine helpful for quickly assessing how AAOI fits into broader market patterns without having to build custom models from scratch. It provides a useful second opinion when reviewing technical setups alongside fundamental data.
