Meta Platforms, Inc. (META) is a Menlo Park, California-based technology company whose "family of apps" — Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads — connects billions of people worldwide. The company generates the large majority of its revenue from digital advertising, selling targeted placements across its platforms. It also operates Reality Labs, which develops hardware including smart glasses and virtual-reality headsets, and has undertaken one of the largest artificial-intelligence infrastructure investments in the technology sector. Investors follow the stock closely because Meta sits at the intersection of digital advertising growth, consumer AI adoption, and an escalating capital-spending cycle. I also checked this using Tickeron’s AI Screener to see how the stock compares to others in the industry.
Over the 30 days through early October 2026, META shares rose about 17.5%, moving from a closing price of roughly $613.48 on September 8 to approximately $720.89. The advance was not linear: the stock rallied sharply through late September, reaching a closing high near $777.59 on September 24 before easing back into the low-$700 range.
The last quarter tells a similar but more volatile story. Three months earlier, shares closed near $603 on July 8. After falling to roughly $539 in the days following the late-July earnings report, the stock recovered steadily through August and then accelerated in September. From about $603 to roughly $721, the quarterly move amounts to an advance of approximately 19.5%.
The dominant catalyst was the September 8 release of Muse, Meta's personal AI assistant. The app climbed rapidly in download rankings, surpassing ChatGPT in U.S. app stores in its early days and recording roughly 2.8 million downloads across the U.S. and Canada within its first 12 days. For investors, Muse provided a tangible, consumer-facing link between Meta's heavy AI infrastructure spending and a potentially monetizable product — a connection the market had been seeking for much of the year.
Around the same time, Meta announced an agreement to pay as much as $18 billion to settle a social-media lawsuit, removing a significant legal overhang. The company also unveiled partnerships with Instacart owner Maplebear (CART) and online travel agency Expedia (EXPE), signaling how AI-driven commerce could extend beyond advertising. At its annual Connect event in late September, Meta introduced new hardware and, shortly after, launched the Meta Enterprise Platform, hiring former MongoDB (MDB) chief executive Chirantan "CJ" Desai to lead the effort. JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth added to the momentum by upgrading the stock to overweight from neutral on September 10. From what I see, these developments helped shift the narrative around Meta's AI investments.
The quarter was defined by a shift from doubt to validation on AI. In late July, Meta reported second-quarter revenue of $60.8 billion, up 28% year over year and slightly ahead of estimates, but earnings per share of $6.18 missed consensus of about $7.20, net income fell 14%, and operating margin narrowed to 31% from 43% a year earlier. Free cash flow collapsed to $784 million as capital expenditures reached roughly $31 billion, and the company raised the lower end of its full-year capex guidance to $130 billion–$145 billion. The stock dropped roughly 9% to 10% in response.
The subsequent recovery reflected a re-rating of that spending. As Muse gained adoption and partnerships demonstrated new revenue pathways, investors began pricing the AI outlay as a strategic asset rather than a pure cost. The result was Meta's strongest monthly performance in years and a return toward the $2 trillion market-capitalization threshold.
Several factors will shape META's direction in the months ahead. The next quarterly earnings report will be pivotal, with investors focused on whether revenue growth keeps pace with rising expenses, whether free cash flow stabilizes, and how management frames 2027 capital spending. The monetization trajectory of Muse and the Meta Enterprise Platform — through subscriptions, commerce take rates, and payments — will be closely scrutinized. Competitive pressure from OpenAI and Anthropic in the AI-agent market, along with ongoing regulatory and legal developments, remains a key risk. With the stock trading near 21 times forward earnings and approaching a $2 trillion valuation, execution against elevated expectations will likely matter more than headline growth alone. I’m watching this closely as the story develops.
