On Thursday, PulteGroup  posted second-quarter earnings that beat analysts’ expectations. The home construction company’s second quarter earnings came in at an adjusted $1.15 a share, exceeding the 87 cents a share expected by analysts polled by FactSet. Revenue climbed +4.2% year-over-year to $2.59 billion, compared to $2.53 billion expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet. Home-sales revenue revealed a +6% increase in closings, to 5,937 homes.However, the increase was partly offset by a -3% decrease in average sales price to $416,000.  Net new orders fell -4% year over year to 6,522 homes with an average sales price of $410,000, down from $426,000 in the year-ago period. Tesla reported its second quarter earnings that surpassed analyst’ expectations. The electric carmaker’s earnings for the quarter came in at $2.18 (ex-items) per share, well ahead of than  3 cents a share expected by analysts (based on Refinitiv data).The EPS marks a turnaround from the year-ago quarter’s adjusted loss of $1.12 a share. Revenue of $6.04 billion fell -5% year-over-year, but beat estimates of  $5.37 billion. “Demand is not our problem,” Chief Executive Elon Musk told analysts on a conference call after the results.
Nike is planning job cuts that is estimated to lead to $200 million to $250 million in one-time employee termination costs, as the company focuses on a strategy shift. The athletic clothing and footwear company had announced in June a new strategy in its e-commerce push called the Consumer Direct Acceleration, amid conronavirus pandemic-induced consumer shift from brick and mortar stores to online shopping. While Nike did not specify the number of job cuts, it did say the online push was “expected to lead to a net loss of jobs across the company," resulting in the one-time charge. Last quarter, Nike’s e-commerce sales grew +75% even as overall revenue fell. Pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc. agreed to provide 600 million doses of its developing coronavirus vaccine to the U.S. government.  In an agreement with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Defense, Pfizer, and its German partner, BioNTech BNTX, will receive $1.95 billion for the first 100 million doses of its BNT162 mRNA-based vaccine.The vaccine is subject to regulatory approval. Last week, Pfizer’s  BNT162 vaccine candidates received 'fast track' designation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, based on preliminary data from Phase 1 and Phase 2 studies. To be honest, I hadn’t noticed silver’s big rally until I looked at Tickeron screener’s group trend this morning.When I clicked on the top performers for the past week, silver stocks were the top performing group with a gain of 13.9%. On Tuesday, Bank of New York Mellon  appointed  Emily Portney chief financial officer.  Portney succeeds Mike Santomassimo , who stepped down to take the same position at Wells Fargo . Portney previously led the client management, sales and service teams for BNY Mellon's asset-servicing business. She had also been CFO for Barclays International  prior to joining BNY.This means that WFC’s stock grew significantly faster than BK’s over the last 12 months. WFC ($101B) has a higher market cap than BK ($31.8B). BK has higher P/E ratio than WFC: -27.489 vs -52.906. BK YTD gains are higher at: -27.489 vs. WFC (-52.906). BK has less debt than WFC: 44.4B vs 291B. WFC has higher revenues than BK: 86.5B vs 19.7B.
The cigarette company also resumed  issuing its full-year guidance. The company’s earnings for the quarter came in at $1.29 an adjusted share, beating analysts’ forecast of $1.10 a share .The figure in the year-ago quarter was $1.46 a share. Revenue of $6.65 billion came in above the $6.5 billion expected by analysts. Cigarette and heated tobacco unit shipment volume fell -14.5%, on a -17.6% decrease in cigarette shipment volumes.
Coca-Cola Co.  beat earnings expectations for the second quarter, but revenues missed estimates. The beverage giant’s adjusted earnings for the three months ending June came in at 42 cents per share, down -33.3% year-over-year and ahead of the Street consensus estimate of 40 cents per share. However, revenue of $7.2 billion fell short of  analysts' estimates of a $7.57 billion.The figure was also -28% lower from the same quarter last year. The company cited " pressure in away-from-home channels, which represent approximately half of the company’s revenues" (and include clients such as sports stadiums and restaurants) as factors behind the revenue decline. The company withdrew its full-year earnings guidance on April 21.
On Tuesday, International Business Machines  (IBM) reported second quarter earnings that surpassed estimates. The cloud/information technology behemoth’s adjusted operating earnings for the three months ending in June declined -31.2% year-over-year to $2.18 per share, but exceeded the Street expectation by more than 10 cents. Revenue for the quarter fell - 5.5% year-over-year to $18.1 billion.  Citing “ the uncertainty in the environment and consistent with our direction from last quarter”, IBM did not provide near-term earnings guidance. Peloton got a price target hike from Goldman Sachs analysts. Goldman raised price target on the shares of the  home-workout-technology company to a Wall-Street-high $84 per share (from $66 per share)., while re-affirming its buy rating.  Goldman cited  sustained demand and above-average delivery wait times led to connected-subscriber growth surpassing Goldman's prior guidance estimates. Peloton is increasing the consumer value proposition for both Peloton products and the broader digital ecosystem, according to Goldman. The investment firm now predicts Peloton's revenue to rise +13.5% per year between 2020 and 2022.The odds of a continued Downtrend are 75%. Britain's biopharmaceutical  AstraZeneca plc  and Oxford University published data from an early stage trial of a coronavirus vaccine study . The two groups described  humoral and cellular immune responses in human trials, with an acceptable safety profile.According to the study, there were 'potent' cellular and humoral immunogenicity in all 1,077 participants in the Phase 1/Phase II study. “The immune responses observed following vaccination are in line with what we expect will be associated with protection against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, although we must continue with our rigorous clinical trial programme to confirm this.
A number of the largest semiconductor manufacturers will be releasing earnings in the next few weeks.STM is pretty average in terms of the analysts’ ratings as well as the short interest ratio. All in all, I would say the outlook for Intel, STMicroelectronics, and Texas Instruments is pretty solid.
JB Hunt Transport Services  got price target hikes from at least two analysts . Amit Mehrotra of Deutsche Bank upgraded rating on the trucking company’s stock to hold from sell.In a commentary cited by Bloomberg, Mehrotra said that a substantial net decrease of truckload capacity is coming in coming quarters, and that will create an upward pressure on volume and pricing, along with (what he perceives to be) a clear cyclical rebound. He also mentioned that low interest rates, limited capital expenditures and an improving growth outlook provide a “potent backdrop for high multiples” . Raymond James analyst Patrick Tyler Brown affirmed his outperform rating, and raised his price target to $145 from $140.
 Analysts Dan Levy and AJ Denham mentioned in a note that they see “multiple factors” causing the recent sharp run-up in Tesla stock,  including “EV euphoria” and short-sale covering and buying by momentum investors.The analysts cited tailwinds like Tesla’s Battery Day (when the company will unveil a long-lasting battery) and possibly positive earnings to be reported for the second-quarter as reasons behind their optimism for the stock. However, Levy  and Denham  cautioned that Tesla shares at current levels are “priced to perfection, we believe any material near-term negative datapoint could lead to a drawdown”. Bloom Energy   shares jumped, following the alternative-energy company’s announcement that it will be introducing hydrogen-powered fuel cells and electrolyzers that produce renewable hydrogen. The company said the fuel cells will be first introduced in South Korea in 2021 through a collaboration  with SK Engineering and Construction (an affiliate of SK Group).The odds of a continued Downtrend are 90%. Tesla  is reportedly  planning to shutter  its factory in Fremont, California. According to publication Electrek, as the electric carmaker shut down its plant in March due to the COVID-19 outbreak,  it also decided to use the situation as an opportunity to  upgrade the facility (as reported by Electrek ) “The strategy follows Tesla’s famous GA4 assembly line built under a tent-like structure in 2018,” Electrek's report said. Electrek also mentioned an internal company leak that Tesla workers have suffered a spike in Covid-19 exposure, primarily at the Fremont factory. When the market went through its big selloff from February 19 through March 23, the SPDR S&P Growth ETF (NYSE: SPYG) dropped 31.27%.While that is a pretty sizable decline, the SPDR S&P Value ETF (NYSE: SPYV) fell 36.67%. Even after the bounce off the lows, the growth index has outperformed the value index.
